The gameplay operates in three dimensions. You can fall down from a wall, but you can't step back on it. Each object has a high set, and the game checks for floor & ceilings to match, and that allows you to go over/under projectiles & such. That's good enough for me.
Replying to @Monquit3st
The fact that the map is technically 2 dimensional & objects are sprites doesn't concern me. One could *not* properly play Doom if it was in the overhead perspective. I could just as easily argue that because each game ends up as a flat projection on a monitor, every game is 2D.
Replying to @lsthart
Most of those new games are made using modern general purpose 3D engines, so they wouldn't be as optimized as old tech that was literally made to do only one thing on a very particular set of hardware.

Apparently save games don't save the randomized table of Icon of Sin's spawn cube landing coordinates, so saving a game with one in the air, then exiting & re-launching the game, and loading that save will result in memory corruption, and the game crashing.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Now, this only happens if you exit the game before loading that save. If you've made it to map 30, saved, and just keep reloading without exiting, then everything works fine.
