Only one correction: 86-DOS wasn't based on Kildall's source code. Paterson just wrote his own implementation of CP/M functions for an 8086, & paired it with Microsoft Basic storage format. Kildall never sued.
But yes, Gates had very little to do with DOS besides making the deal.

Well, that was its primary intention. The purpose of 86-DOS was easy porting of CP/M programs to 8086 based system that SCP was also selling. Nothing wrong with making a clone. Hell, most of the world runs on Linux these days, and not Unix.

Personally, I have a fairly expensive mixer that can output digital signal to USB, and that's what I capture. So I basically take my PC out of the equation. I guess it's the same as buying a dedicated card.

IBM Basic ROM was pretty much deprecated by the time the PS/2 line rolled in (87) though. Certainly wouldn't be around by the time Windows actually got a significant install base. It's just such a strange statement to make.

This is about Sinclair QL though, not IBM PC. On PC Basic was either external, loaded up by DOS (Basic or Advanced Basic) or the one in the IBM's ROM which didn't need DOS, nor started DOS. Not in any way was any of it "beneath DOS". That statement is just wrong.

You are not unique. I did the same. In fact, I still have all those machines. I have a ZX Spectrum with Basic, an IBM PS/2 model 30 (which, btw, doesn't even allow booting to ROM Basic without a 3rd party tool) & a variety of vintage PCs. It is still a weird statement in context.

They didn't really need to do that. All that had to do is boot into safe mode or recovery console, and delete the files from there. Also there's no such thing as "MS-DOS 2.7".
