Yes, the 2018 4K UHD is the closest we have to the original theatrical presentation. Definitely not the 35mm scan that's going around that doesn't have any green at all in any scenes, to the point where some of the scenes look like they are completely monochrome.

Idk about the virtually impossible bit. It's just not cost effective, but I feel like even a digital approximation of Technicolor should be possible. Replying to @dosnostalgic
If someone with a real understanding of the Technicolor process can explain to me why I may be wrong here, I'm all ears.
Replying to @Vokabre
Technicolor is a bit more than that, so there has to be additional process involved at several stages to mimic the look.

Jeez. Ok. But Suspiria wasn't actually shot in Technicolor, right? I thought it was used for the final prints.
Huh. I wondered why Charlotte Rampling being the Reverend Mother in Jodorowsky's Dune wasn't covered in the documentary, only to discover that it was probably to avoid mentioning this bit.
Replying to @bai0
See, I feel like these physical parts would be easier to emulate. You don't have to overlight anymore, so that's for the DP to figure out an approximation. And, of course, the rest falls onto the production designer, which was also an extremely important part of the look.
Replying to @ClaraLaFlore
Replying to @NihilismFeline
Yes, I've seen that, but that is a *completely* different case. We know how Technicolor works, it's been around for a while, and there are records & even some people still alive who did. Not to mention it's not a particularly complicated process to begin with.

Replying to @Donovan_Elk and @lsthart
Windows 3.x kernel is like 3 separate VMs. Its gui is integrated. Its behavior is baked into its executable format. When running a DOS program Windows 3.x doesn't hand it over to DOS, but instead essentially emulates a closed environment for it.
Replying to @Donovan_Elk and @lsthart
For example, here's Win 3.11 running in 640x480 256 color SVGA protected mode while having two real mode DOS games open in separate windows. One in 640x350 EGA, another in 320x200 VGA. It's not "just a GUI". It functions in its own, fairly unique, way.

Or just run DOOM. The game has its own memory manager, and I think requires less than 300k of conventional memory to run. They didn't even bother putting a conventional memory requirements anywhere (readme, manual, box) because of that. 🤷
It is so weird to see DOOM be used as an example of this so often. DOOM only requires 325k of base memory to start. It is so unlikely that you have less that id Software didn't even bother putting conventional memory requirements anywhere, like a readme, a manual, or a box.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
The game doesn't even have a "not enough conventional memory" error message. If you have less than 320k free, it'll just lock up your machine. 🤷
Replying to @GarethStep
Yep. There are hundreds of examples of games with high conventional memory requirements. Doom isn't one of them.

I checked after I made my tweet, and Doom requires 325k of base memory. But the rest of my point is still accurate. The game also doesn't even have an error message like "not enough conventional memory". If you have less than 320k it just locks the machine up.

Doom's performance depending on the CPU speed has nothing to do with the discussion at hand, as it is unaffected by the DOS configuration, unless you have HDD caching driver installed or something like that.
Replying to @AllanRicharz
Diablo has some of the lowest Windows 95 game requirements possible for the time.
Replying to @miketheitguy
It's probably the other way around. If you only had 4 megs of high ram, Doom didn't run if you didn't have entire 4 megs free, as it would need *all* of it. The solution was then to load all the drivers into conventional memory instead, as Doom cares very little about that.
Haha. Get the fuck outta here. https://x.com/dosnostalgic/status/1803078264383996281
Replying to @lukaaash and @miketheitguy
Doom allocates all of the memory it needs and loads up most of its resources before the game even draws a menu. It all happens during that memorable R_Init: Doom refresh daemon [.... ] sequence. Its memory extender is built in instead of being external, so you can't configure it.

My standards of "playable" are defined solely by my ability to play the game & control it in a way that allows me avoid dying until at least the final map of episode 1. Something I don't find possible on an SX in full detail mode, even with reduced screen.
Replying to @noop_dev and @RotgruenerFilz
So no, once more, I do not find most console ports of Doom unplayable. You can start splitting hairs about simplified geometry or other assets, but the bottom line is only this: can I play it comfortably or not. So I reject you hypothesis completely.
