I'd never buy any piece of tech this person is pitching. Cool, but Hercules wasn't first graphics card for PC, that would be the CGA card from IBM themselves. And while Hercules could do graphics, it was just a 1 bit monochrome that could fill the memory, so calling it a "graphics" card is a bit excessive. It was very much a text card.
For a divisive film Saltburn didn't actually have that much of an effect on me. It was fine. Couldn't really predict where it was going most of the time, so that was good.
Replying to @hikari_no_yume and @fluddsskark
Sure, just like CGA is famous for its 4 color palettes in graphical mode. But even then it was sort of an afterthought. Even more so with Hercules. But yes, I guess it is a "graphics card" because what else would it be? 🤷♂️ Point taken.

You're missing reading the manual.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
For those who don't know: Max Payne's initial difficulty has 7 different levels that affect enemy & your damage factor, enemy hit points, ammo pickups, etc. You start in the middle (level 4), & if you're doing good the game ups the level. If you die quickly, it drops it, BUT...
Replying to @dosnostalgic
... in order for the game to determine that you died the entire slow mo death animation has to play out. That never happens. So by the mid point one usually ends up with difficulty higher than the highest manually selectable one. That can be extremely annoying.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Less so now, but it was a lot more annoying back in the day when loading such a resource heavy game could take minutes.

How to identify releases of Prince of Persia 2:
- Release floppy version will display PRINCE OF PERSIA 2 1.0 on ALT+V
- CD-ROM collection version same as above, but notes "v1.01" in the setup
- CD-ROM "Limited", which is even more broken, displays "v1.1" & title over the game gfx

Loved seeing Amelie on a big screen again after 20 years. I'm glad that the film is so powerfully positive that I, now being older, more cynical & sad, still find it incredibly impactful.
However, I was a bit surprised to see that the "restoration" looked exactly the same.
🧵👇
Replying to @dosnostalgic
It basically looked like it was a fresh digital encode of the same master from 23 years ago. It exhibited all the imperfections one would expect from it. Now, it gives the film its signature look, so of course I loved it, but I wondered why no remastering has been done.
👇
Replying to @dosnostalgic
And it turns out I was right. Found an interview with Jean-Pierre Jeunet from two weeks ago that says no remaster was done because of a "guy, very mean with me, refused to pay for the elements 23 years ago (...) and I cannot kill this guy because he's already dead."
👇
Replying to @dosnostalgic
So basically Amelie only exists in a 23 year old 2K digital master, and that's it. It felt that the sound mix remained the same too. But the English subtitles have been punched up a bit. A few issues I had with the Miramax translation have been addressed.

I think it was more of a case of artificially extending the game by preventing save scumming, as it only has 14 levels.
Replying to @EldritchNexus and @KiibouRanger
Not really, since usually you'd need a few tries at a level before you could stampede thought it. I mean, this is how all games worked before saving was a thing.
Replying to @EldritchNexus and @KiibouRanger
Like I said, I feel that was the motivation behind it. With the amount of cool tech Dark Forces has, I very much doubt they couldn't figure out mid level saving. It was definitely a deliberate choice. We can only speculate why.
Replying to @EldritchNexus and @KiibouRanger
Obviously it was also a deliberate choice. 🤷♂️ I'm sure we'll find out about that one soon enough, because I see a lot of people complaining about it.
Ok, I had to stop on the 2nd mission because I'm pretty sure the MIDI player is broken and it was hurting both my brain and my ears, but other than that, pretty solid. 👍

Apparently it's a known issue, and a patch is already coming. Quite an unfortunate oversight tbh, as it is even noticeable in the main menu.
Replying to @Real_Child_Dog
OPL3 is a bit easier on the ears, but the timing is still broken. Sometimes it's not very noticeable, but other times it's OUCH
Replying to @RichDuckKing
Just tried it, and OPL3 is a bit easier on the ears. I wonder if some of the instruments in the included GM soundfont introduce additional delay, but unfortunately timing still seems to be broken in both MIDI and OPL renditions.

I'm being told that there's a patch coming that addresses the music player issue, so it seems to me that something else was also broken.
Replying to @NYVintageMicros
While that does help a little (I think the GM soundfont is partially at fault here,) the timing on the player is broken.

I generally recommend all commercial re-releases of old PC games on other platform, regardless of their price. There are new bugs though, so there's that.
The price for original Dark Forces was $44.95, that is about $91.50 when adjusted for inflation.

And not for nothing, I paid Disney $30 for this. Essentially a full game price for a nearly 30 year old game. What I'm paying for *are* the new features/additions, so they should all be functional, as far as I'm concerned.
Replying to @AceParty
Unless we're talking AAA, which is only a small percentage of overall releases, no, most games are not, in fact, far above $30.
Here are some PC RAM prices from March of 1995. $1 back then is basically $2 today. https://x.com/ryangs/status/1763251839321936355

The craziest thing to me about Amelie's success is that an American studio, Warner Bros, gave Jean-Pierre Jeunet $55 million to do *whatever* afterwards, and he turned in a 2+ hour World War I movie entirely in French with paragraphs of subtitles on screen for the US version. 😂
