The same can (and is often) said, but it's not really the case. Windows 1 - 3 do rely on DOS to function, and never unload it while running. But Windows 9X only use DOS as a bootloader. Then it's unloaded completely, and the DOS compatibility layer is still performed by Windows.

"Best" is subjective. The Mac port done by Pressage Software, for example, has all the sprites redrawn in higher resolution. And it renders the vector cutscenes at 4x, additional animations from PC version included. Is it best? Not for me.

Sega CD version adds pretty cool (and most importantly - fitting) new music throughout the game though, and is the only CD port of the game to have as much new music as it does.

It has brand new remixes of the few tunes the original game had. It doesn't have any other enhancements, besides a stupid optional gfx filter. They didn't even bother to increase the rendering resolution of the cutscenes, the easiest & most obvious thing to do.

The cutscenes *are* vector. It's the only thing that is vector in the game, the rest is sprites.

Looks like Alien Rampage (aka "Ravager" when it was going to be published by Apogee) was a completely different game. Documentation leaked with Duke 4Ever builds mentions Darrin (Darrin Hurd, the programmer,) Greg, and Pete. None of those names are in Alien Rampage's credits.

No, DOS version is the *only* home computer version of the game that has actual in-game music. Although it actually targets the CM-32L, not the MT-32, to get the sound effects.

... you *have to* play on the default difficulty in the DOS version because there's a bug that makes enemies harder every time you load a save on easier ones, and harder difficulties are reserved for FPS gods & multiplayer.

1. Linear increase isn't common in arcades. The whole point is to throw you off. You essentially need to figure out how to cheese each enemy, and by the time you do, they made sure you've spent enough money to get there, so it doesn't matter anymore.
