Nobody chose them. As usual for IBM, it's the most direct solution to a limited memory problem. EGA graphics are planar, but long story short colors are outputted by using 2 combinations of RGB. So 000,000 through 111,111. Basically that's just all the possible colors you get:

While yes, other implementations of PC DOS existed, they weren't very popular. Microsoft distributed MS-DOS for very cheap AND gave clone makers a great deal for OEM versions. Also a lot of clones didn't have 100% compatibility, which is, of course, a bummer.

Chasm is a very cool looking, but kind of a frustrating fps about time travel. In a way it's sort of like Wolfenstein 3D meets Quake. Lots of very cramped spaces & spongy enemies.
The remaster seems to be pretty good. Easier to play even, just because it's smoother.
Took me about an hour to blast through about half of Chasm: The Rift remaster on normal difficulty. I gotta say, it's a lot easier to play just because the game is a lot more fluid now. Platforming is also a lot less annoying.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
The only bit I really miss is the effect when the game dropped resolution in parts of the screen where it rendered particles & stuff. I'm sure it was done for performance purposes, but it was such a big part of the look. If you played Chasm you know what I'm talking about.

A bunch of people watched some YouTube videos, & now you can't discuss CGA without them bringing up that "CGA was designed for composite color output." No, it wasn't. We can actually see that in the official IBM CGA documentation from 1982. Not a single mention of NTSC artifacts. https://x.com/Foone/status/1338775711243325440
Replying to @dosnostalgic
I mean, look. It even mentions the "160x100", which is technically an exploit. And it doesn't even tell you how to achieve it. Surely if something like composite color was intended it would have been included.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
In reality it's just a happy accident. IBM PC was a machine for spreadsheets and word processing. They wanted to say you can have 16 colors while doing work on your expensive computer with an expensive official RGB monitor. It was NOT for playing games on your tv.
Replying to @LocalAitch
I'm talking about artifact color specifically. Of course CGA had composite output, that's the entire reason this debate even exists.
Replying to @thomasfuchs
It could have been. But that's all after the fact. And then they dropped it altogether.
Replying to @BenjiDubs
Sure. But then PCjr also essentially implemented was CGA should have been in the first place. With an actual 160x200 mode with 16 colors, or a definable palette of 4 just by a virtue of adding a few more ram bits, something that apparently was out of question for the original. 🤷♂️
Replying to @LocalAitch
Idk, just the inclusion of the 160x100 mode tells me otherwise. Like, they don't even tell you how to achieve it, and it's not straighforward at all & generally feels like something that was discovered after the fact. Yet it's listed everywhere.
Replying to @LocalAitch
But of course, who knows, I guess. Apple II composite color games have been the norm at the time, so surely at least some of the engineers had to be familiar with the concept.

October 21st 1997 is what a bunch of sources cite as the release date of the original Grand Theft Auto game. Idk where that came from.
EU release files are from 10/16, a week isn't enough to press CDs.
US release was in 98.
Campaign magazine article points to November 28th 1997

To the day release dates are a fairly recent phenomenon which came with the arrival of digital distribution. Before that it was largely whenever stores got it, unless it was some high profile thing when they were told not to put it out before a certain day.
