Looking through some old issues of Game.EXE, a Russian gaming magazine from 90s-2000s. Stumbled upon this slightly melancholic interview with Jordan Mechner about The Last Express from 12/1997, which was conducted after it became obvious that it's not recouping the investments.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Because Game.EXE was cool and quirky, the pages also include excerpts from email exchange that make it known that an interview deadline was missed, and then a bit where Natalia Dubrovskaya flat out roasts @jmechner for thinking that The Last Express could outsell Myst.
Replying to @jmechner
I think the game is amazing. And just like Natalia I was also seriously impressed with how authentic the Russian stuff in it was. Would love to read your journals pertaining to the game's development some day.
Replying to @MiklCraw4d
Yeah, it's too smart for its own good. It's an amazing niche game with a huge AAA budget. Can't think of many games from that era that cost $5 mil+.

Meh. It sure feels like it's what it was. Alone in the Dark 2 was developed in about the same time, by a new team, and yes, while it's also pretty horrible, it's not TekWar. Now, developing Extreme Paintbrawl in 2 weeks, now THAT'S something.

Don't listen to what some say. Original Windows PC port of The House of the Dead is perfectly fine. Its music is intact, and is, in fact, better than the original arcade because it's a completely redone CD audio soundtrack. https://x.com/dosnostalgic/status/1384271956220907520

Biggest concession is that all textures are half the size of originals. Just so one could play it in 320x240 in software mode back in 98. In game in hardware accelerated 640x480 mode it looks totally fine. https://x.com/dosnostalgic/status/1384283004739018756?t=qcWL-9W7g-joMrqjlw47rw&s=19
