When it originally released it worked fine, but was *very* crash prone. SP1 fixed that. Otherwise, it's just an OS. As long as it doesn't crash, and the drivers work, I don't really need it for much else. Everything worked perfectly fine.

I mean, sure. Ecstatica is also in 3D because the ellipsoids are calculated in 3D space, and clip correctly. But it's a lot more simplified than traditional polygonal rendering systems, hence better performance, but requires a more involved artistic design to sell it.

In addition to plain old VGA "Amazon" also supported SVGA. Pressing ALT+V during the game switched it to high resolution mode where you got constant inventory screen, options to rewatch previous cutscenes, and a game window 1/4 size of the total area. #DOSGaming

It's an interesting game for sure, but it would have benefited from a few adjustments. The FOV and walking speed are terrible. It could have given you a few hints upfront, etc. to make it a bit easier to get into.

If you've played the VGA version of the first game, you've also seen very little actual art by Purcell. Him and Mark Ferrari shine in original EGA versions of Monkey Island and LOOM. Peter Chan was the lead Lucas Arts artist in the VGA era and beyond.

Both of those are incorrect. DOS was not open source. Gates never worked at IBM. Gates bought an existing 8086 OS called Q-DOS from Seattle Computer Products and hired its developer Tim Patterson. He then licensed MS-DOS (then titled PC DOS) to IBM.

My comparison photos are emulated. I'm playing the arcade one in 1080p. It looks fine in game, I barely noticed until I did a comparison. Can't really tell the difference in Virtua Cop 2, I gotta put them side to side too.

It works pretty well, all things considered. You can plop that driver into a different SCI1 game, and then compare the results with official EGA conversions of something like LSL1VGA or SQ4.
A few SCUMM VGA games have similar EGA support as well.

Nintendo takes everything that's high profile. It would be gone in days. Internet Archive actually works with Nintendo constantly. It doesn't even have 2 b games, it could be marketing materials, magazines, etc. If it gets coverage & they think they could make it go away, they do

Ummm, no. Nintendo had several lawsuit threats targeting SM64 decomp & its forks, and you can easily look them up. They tried. This is probably the only case there Nintendo hit someone, but they ended up walking away anyway. An exception that proves the rule.

Because SM64 decomp doesn't actually use any of their resources. You have to provide your own rom dump. They *did* successfully take down all the bundles that were hosted elsewhere. With id's game quite obviously the very copyrighted Mario is a part of the package.

(1/2) Known archivists also have their reputation to worry about. If a big project comes along that requires some kind of corporate negotiations, or approval, one doesn't want to risk it. The strong had preserved the data off that floppy in multiple locations. That's their policy

He's not mentioned anywhere. Not in St. John's docs, and not in Craig Eisler's blog posts about the development of DirectX. Additionally, it would be bit weird for a person at Microsoft who's been a manager for years at this point to just jump in as a coder all of sudden.
