Your reminder of market perspectives: in the 2000s when the entire "gaming" world only brought up adventure games to say how DEAD they were Her Interactive was selling MILLIONS of Nancy Drew games. They sold more than Myst. They were selling better than Tomb Raider.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Needless to say Nancy Drew games were selling better than 99% of 90s point & click adventure games.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
And yet they were still written off as games for little girls. Even though it turned out that there was more little girls playing them than the audience of some of the more popular PC titles of those days. 🤷♂️ And as for kids games, they were selling better than Harry Potter ones.

I wouldn't call it an indie since it was developed for WizardWorks/GT Interactive, a $200+ mil company. The fact that they wanted a cheap hunting simulator cranked out in 3 months is a bit of different matter.
Replying to @ChrisDeLeon
Sure, although that wasn't the case here either. As James Boer points out in his making of article, he was freshly hired by WizardWorks as a programmer, and this was the first thing that landed in his lap. They wanted a shooting/hunting $20 game, and they wanted it in 3 months
Replying to @ChrisDeLeon
Basically it's more of a story of someone quickly & correctly figuring out the exact scope of a project under a very tight deadline on their first try, which is no less impressive.
Replying to @ChrisDeLeon
Oh yes, absolutely. It definitely showed that there are still massive niches to discover that aren't filled by the AAA products. Deer Hunter's success (first? accessible product in a field) is less surprising to me than something like Moorhuhn, for example.

So what I'm learning from seeing photos of old Macintosh computers ruining ports of DOS games (so far it's Sierra and LucasArts adventures) is that they x2 the graphics to 640x400, and then letterbox it to fill 640x480, completely ignoring the intended aspect ratio.

Rebel Moon was an OEM-only game bundled with Creative Labs 3D Blaster PCI or VLB cards, and supported Rendition Speedy 3D and Creative Labs CGL apis. Many years later someone figured out that you can run it on whatever with a "-vga" parameter. A very fast Pentium is required.
