Myst (Windows 10, 2021) #NotDOS
A full 3D remake of Myst in Unreal engine built for (optional) VR mode, and puzzle randomization option.
Playing the new Myst is pretty interesting because *everything* is re-interpreted. Because it's built with VR in mind, the spaces have proper scale & dimension, and puzzles and their controls are adjusted accordingly. Different take on environments too. https://x.com/dosnostalgic/status/1435758455030177796
Replying to @dosnostalgic
And I don't even like Myst! But I keep playing just to see all the changes. And it's finally actually beautiful to look at, especially in VR.

Replying to @chudsommeleir
By default all the messages have been replaced with not very good pre-rendered 3D models, but now there's an option to use videos from realMyst.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
So yeah, as a non-fan of Myst, I wholeheartedly recommend this version. Doubly so if you have a VR setup.
Now, if only someone else had money to remake some 90s Macromedia Director game in VR.

It has more instructions than original Myst ever had. The rest are valid.
Replying to @Pixelmusement
Original Myst just dumped you right in, and that was it. Figure it out. BUT it had stuff like you could only carry ONE page at a time, for example.
Replying to @Pixelmusement
Oh, and original Myst didn't highlight anything. Not even movement. Just turn left/turn right. The rest is finger cursor. Yeah.
I feel like if it was a first person cockroach VR game, it would make people sick for a multitude of reasons, but I would absolutely pay real money to play that. https://x.com/ben_304/status/1435773402992676867

Replying to @DavidXNewton
The best puzzles in Myst are the ones that are telegraphed properly, and are easy. The rest is bullshit. But yeah, the environmental storytelling is pretty well done. Still, my "favorite" is Myst 3. Made puzzles more accessible, and the world more alive. Cool tech too.

Yeah, that's how I feel too, although for me that's still bad, because it results in such a frustrating experience for most of the game. Incredibly high production value though. Great FMV integration into CG 3D stuff in an era when most games failed at that.

Replying to @dosnostalgic
An interesting thing I have to give Meier props for is that every time he claims one of his own achievements as one of "firsts" in gaming, he also adds "as far as I know" or something to that matter. That is something that many industry veterans seem to be incapable of doing.

Replying to @dosnostalgic

Dialogue was stock, so anyone from Napoleon to Stalin could threaten you with nukes, but players found Ghandi ones most memorable.
India was set as nation favoring science, so it was likely to acquire nukes faster than others.

Oh, I guess I might as well explain how this happened. Weinstein's Miramax was producing Dogma. When the film began attracting controversy Disney, who owned Miramax, got cold feet. Harvey & Bob then bought the film outright & sold distribution to Lionsgate. The deal since lapsed.
