It's all in the application. Check out Matt Furniss's AdLib (OPL2) soundtrack for "Hired Guns", and its Roland MT-32 (remember, this device cost $550 or more) conversion.

My point was that the conversion is terrible as well. Of course one could have approximated it better, or recomposed it entirely. But yeah, FM synthesis does have a sort of inherent grit that really adds character.

Right. However, Zeliard arguably also has one of the best early MT-32 soundtracks as well.

Every Cryo game in a nutshell
That's Cryo in a nutshell. Lost Eden is basically attempting to repeat Dune's concept, and somehow managed to "streamline" the strategy part to the point of it being extremely boring and repetitive. https://x.com/martijnfrazer/status/1383426311926935556
Replying to @martijnfrazer
It's meant to be strategic, but they forgot to add actual strategy. I've always maintained that Dune was Cryo's most successful project as far as game design goes, and all the games that tried to iterate on the same concept failed in the areas that strayed away from the formula.

Replying to @Scalibq
He tells the story numerous times in the Retro Gamer magazine. Especially back in the day when they kept interviewing the same 20 people over and over.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Yeah, I guess it is meant to be depth of field. Some stuff is "in focus", and other stuff is blended, but how it works in relation to the camera is a bit weird.

Replying to @MobyGamer
It is constant level, but it is only sort of doing it to the edges in front of the camera. Although even then it's a bit inconsistent. And it doesn't do it to anything else.
Replying to @MobyGamer
Yes, I get it, but I feel like that would have been even harder to implement, especially back then. If it's not meant to be a simple substitute for depth of field then I gotta question why the entire edge of the table doesn't have that effect applied at all times.
Replying to @MobyGamer
Maybe. But what's the point of calculating certain edges being worthy of the effect while others aren't? Wouldn't it be easier to just not do that and apply it evenly, unless there was an intent?
