Some of you asked about Q2DOS's performance on real hardware vs DosBox, so here it is on my Pentium 2. I believe a lot of the slowdown is caused by Quake 2's caching system not working too well with flash storage on that machine. Other than that - pretty reasonable. #DOSGaming

Quake 2 is a lot more uniformed in color than Quake, which a lot of people called "brown", but it's actually largely blue. If you play Quake 2 in software it is extremely noticeable. It is hardware accelerated lighting that adds color to Q2, often in garish ways.

Another big strike against Monet game vs the Van Gogh one that isn't that noticeable on screenshots: Mission Sunlight uses a software renderer. It looks grainy. It works well with the style. Monet is hardware accelerated, and all the low res textures are filtered as a result.

It's a separate entity entirely. When Windows finishes loading what you see as DOS is not actually DOS, but rather Windows itself. Which is why some commands, functionality, and compatibility are different. When rebooting to DOS mode, it's actually pure DOS.

They certainly had some interesting features, but I think the same can be said of many European games in general. At the same time most Eastern European DOS fps games weren't great, despite these features. STALKER really stands out in part because of its setting. It all clicked.

WinG was responsible for quite a few great Windows 3.x games, so I wouldn't exactly go "fuck WinG". It's just that approach to hardware access was outdated by the time Win95 rolled around. Lion King also had an okay DOS port everyone could play instead.

There are so many effect shots in the movie, it's crazy. They are painting out modern looking buildings, replacing ads with art, repainting existing objects they couldn't actually touch, adding elements like steam for Amelie's freshly cooked pasta, etc. Incredible amount of work.

Windows 3.1 was impossible to run without MS-DOS, but it itself has everything an OS needs to have. Its own memory manager, executable format, driver structure, multitasking, virtualization, etc. It does still rely on lots of DOS functions for backwards compatibility.

Here's Win 3.11 running in 640x480 256 color SVGA protected mode while having two real mode DOS games open in separate windows. One in 640x350 EGA, one in 320x200 VGA. Just a gui shell it is not.

The answer is "yes, it is both", but it is most certainly not "just" an MS-DOS program. These days a Linux bootloaders are more complicated than entire DOS ever was, so you can think of it that way, if you *really* need some kind of a distinction for some reason.
