The Matrix, digital home video journey.
- original 1999 DVD
- 2004 DVD remaster with altered color timing to match the sequels
- 2008 blu-ray struck from the same master
- 2018 4K HDR edition supervised by Bill Pope
Replying to @dosnostalgic
I can't express my happiness at being able to watch one of my favorite films in HD at home in a way that resembled what I originally saw in theaters. Can't believe it took nearly two decades.
Replying to @tamriilin
The original DVD looks like shit because it's so old, but at least it's not tinted green all over. The new 4K transfer is *chef's kiss*.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
If you have a 4K setup, but don't own the 2018 release of The Matrix, idk what the hell are you even doing.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Still waiting for a release of Terminator 2 that resembles what was in the theaters. *Looks at watch*. Coming up on 30 years now. 🤷♂️
Replying to @tamriilin
It's an expensive Hollywood production. The way the touch of green was worked into brownish look and heavy shadows was great on screen. The lighting too. Most of that is gone in the original DVD because the compression just couldn't handle it. It's mostly just... brown.
Replying to @chowspecial
Each home video release of T2 is fucked up in at least a few ways, imo.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Funniest thing I've noticed while watching the newest HD release of T2: they finally painted out Robert Patrick's reappearing dick in that one shot. Because *that's* what was important, apparently.
Replying to @redneptonic
It *is* green if you watch the movie, but no, it wasn't supposed to be as green as they made it in 2004. It is much more subtle and artistic.
Replying to @redneptonic
Well, if you have a 4K setup, I recommend it. Original Matrix is so beautiful with tiny bit of green worked in among brownish world with harsh shadows and rays of light.

I assume we're unlikely to get that any time soon, so I can recommend grabbing Project 4K77 if you're willing to jump through all the hoops and find it on Usenet.
Replying to @doarquette
4K77 is a step beyond Despecialized (not knocking it though) because they aim to just scan prints at 4K. You also get options for no DNR, DNR, or DNR + color corrected variants. Original and Jedi have been done, but they are still looking for non-damaged prints of Empire.

The Matrix is still green, while the real world is blue. It's just not that overt.
Replying to @DanJosephsG and @tamriilin

The subtle green tint was always there. It was very tasteful. The matrix was green, while the real world was blue. It is still there in the new master.
Replying to @enigmo666
First of all, let's start with the fact that this isn't the greatest scan. I mean just look at it:
Replying to @enigmo666
Secondly, it's pretty damn close
Replying to @enigmo666
That's not an HDR screenshot, btw. You'll never find a film scan that's the same as the final digital home video version because they aren't meant to be shown the same. But surely we can agree that the new master is closer to the intent than the 2004 version?
Replying to @hydroxyde
Can't speak for the trilogy, but the stand alone 4K edition came with the blu-ray that was struck from the new master. The problem with it is that the master was HDR color graded, something that regular blu-ray doesn't handle, so as a result it looks like the white balance is off
Replying to @DavidForden
It IS tinted in the digital world, just not that overtly. It's a lot more obvious while watching the film rather than the extreme example I picked.
Replying to @DavidForden
No. And definitely not in that scene. Take it from me, the guy who saw it 74 times.

Replying to @dosnostalgic
