Replying to @dosnostalgic
And with all of that they *didn't* find a role for Emily Perkins? That's a shame.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
It always bugged me that it was Katherine Isabelle who got all the Ginger Snaps fame, while it was Emily Perkins who carried that story. And Ginger Snaps 2 really showed off her acting abilities.
Replying to @retrohistories
I knew she was in it, and I always knew she'd be recognized one day. I remember watching Ginger Snaps 2 and going "oh my god, this kid is a fantastic actress!"
Replying to @oregoodness
Ginger Snaps is absolutely incredible, especially considering that it was made during the time when horror films were at its lowest. I actually think Ginger Snaps 2 is quite good as well, and wish it was more recognized. Stay away from Ginger Snaps Back though.
Replying to @oregoodness
I enjoy JB a bunch (idk what cut you've seen, but I think the director's cut is slightly more effective,) but it isn't nearly as strong or engageing. But JB *clearly* draws a lot of inspiration from Ginger Snaps. I honestly still can hardly believe GS exists in the 1st place.
Replying to @oregoodness
I don't like Fox at all as an actress, but I think she fit well in JB, and did a good job. Mostly because it felt like they were playing to her strengths. I also can't quite pinpoint what is exactly wrong with JB. All the elements are there. Maybe needed a stronger director.
Replying to @oregoodness
Yeah, when they released the blu-ray a few years ago it has tons of bts material, and it clearly shows that it was the spirit of a bunch of young people wanting to make a cool & new horror flick with very little money that drove all of that.
Replying to @oregoodness
No, haven't even heard of it. I might check it out.
Replying to @oregoodness
It's not *that* ultra low budget, obviously, but it's still pretty cheap. It's Canadian, so it's partly made with government money, but they had trouble getting the needed amount through other companies, and it fell through a few times before they finally managed to get it.
Replying to @oregoodness
And it's a great example of a gem being discovered fairly quickly, because when it was released it just *died*. Then ot quickly ended up on video, cable, and shown in foreign countries though. And all of sudden - massive recognition just from people seeing it on tv.
Replying to @oregoodness
I very distinctly remember seeing the Russian version on TV. It was unfortunately retitled to just "Werewolf", and after the first couple of scenes I was dialing my friend who also loved horror, and being like "Turn on channel 4 right NOW! This movie is so fucking cool!"
Replying to @oregoodness
And of course now that I am an adult who appreciates filmmaking even more, my admiration of Ginger Snaps only grew over the years.
Replying to @oregoodness

Replying to @expectproblems
Oh yes, absolutely. It's just... idk... too familiar to me. Like, you know how you can always tell a lower budget 70s Italian film? Same thing here. It's combination of stock, lenses, not enough light, and common techniques of the time & place, like abundance of zooms, etc. >>...
Replying to @expectproblems
>... Not saying it's "bad" or anything, but to me the best works manage to break out of that a little, which is what Tarkovsky was mostly known for. Breaking the format. But Stalker seems to almost revel in it.
Replying to @expectproblems
Yes, exactly. With Stalker there's also that weird thing where they made the movie three times, and the first attempt that was shot on foreign stock was RUINED in a lab, but I can only judge what's on screen. Visually the best parts of Stalker are the sepia ones.

Replying to @tametick and @Amon26
Syntax, yes, all the assembler that I'm sure it had to rely on to achieve all of its features, definitely no.
Replying to @Amon26
Not much. I mean, there isn't much to know, as far as I'm concerned. I like the look, but that's about it. It is quite a technical achievement, in a way, because of the limited technology, and yet those technical limitations are what's holding it back from being a good game. 🤷
Replying to @Amon26
Idk. I'm mostly referring to the single height levels. No matter how many limbs one can shoot off, in the end the game is essentially little more than Wolfenstein 3D as far as maps are concerned, and that becomes boring/annoying quickly.
Replying to @Amon26
It's that combined with the fact that they decided to "compensate" for it in level design by making things complicated with multiple buttons, timed doors, etc. It's really frustrating. Especially when combined with later bullet spongy enemies.
Replying to @Amon26
It's a paradox of a game. It did so many things before most others, and yet it also relied on stuff that was old hat at that point.

If you have a vintage DOS PC I'd recommend playing on that. The game plays a bit sluggishly in DosBox. Plus if you have a Sound Blaster 16 you can use voice commands. Or even use a 90s VR headset! 😂
Replying to @tametick and @Amon26
It's the combination of both of those that makes it difficult to port, not just one or the other.

When Polish-developed turn-based tactical RPG "Gorky 17" (aka Odium in the US) got released in Russia, it got a proper localization first, but just a month later it was published *again* in a "comedy" translation as "Gorky 18".
Replying to @BregerW
Odium is just the US title. I don't know if there are any content differences with the European English-language release, but I don't think so.

And don't send me that clip of Bruce Campbell going "it's a re-quel". It doesn't disprove anything I'm saying. It's like saying Army of Darkness is a remake of Evil Dead 2 just because there's a recap upfront, not to mention an actual RETCON of an ED2's ending. 🤷♂️
Replying to @RummazKnowsBest
There is no book in the second movie, only in the recap. That's why the plot point of Annie bringing extra pages with her is there, because the book is gone. The shorter recap is there just because it's shorter. His friends don't really figure into the plot of the sequel.
Replying to @RummazKnowsBest
And the fact that it's the same plot? I mean, the plot is a bunch of people in a cabin getting possessed and picked off one by one. Yeah, it's not much of a plot, but... I mean the plot of most Friday the 13th movies isn't all that different from the 1st film either. 🤷♂️
Replying to @RummazKnowsBest
Yeah, a lot of people didn't seem to understand that it's a recap, although I'm really not sure why because they RECREATE the ending of the first film in order to connect them. ED2 literally begins the second the first one ends. But that's why in AoD they added the narration.
Replying to @RummazKnowsBest
Yeah, but I also feel like maybe if the people were *paying attention*. I sort of understand the confusion when it was in theaters years after the original that wasn't all that successful, but when it was on video and people usually owned both? I feel like that's mostly on them🤷♂️
Replying to @mcclure111
