I remember when it was first pointed out that Nintendo's ROM of Super Mario Bros available across its digital platforms was, in fact, an enthusiast dumped ROM that's been available online for a couple decades, some people said that since cartridges don't change, neither do (1/2)
Replying to @dosnostalgic
(2/2) the contents of their dumps. While that's partially true, the methods we use to record said dumps do evolve, and our tools change. Here's Nerdly Pleasures with an article on this subject:

Replying to @dosnostalgic
Ok, this is already pretty different. Instead of setting up the life in town for an hour this film spent 25 minutes setting up the four main characters and their backstories. Let's see if it pays off. Visually very much a Friedkin movie. Lots of handheld as well as long pans.

Replying to @demodulated

Replying to @dosnostalgic
Both films spend about an hour before anyone gets into a truck, and while I find all the changes in Sorcerer interesting, I think most of them lessened emotional impact. So far backstories in place of relationships don't have any bearing on the plot. Great looking film though.

Oof. Cool, cool. Of course Americans had to one up the original movie and replace one of its best, but simple set pieces with a bridge sequence that looks like it cost millions of dollars to achieve, but still doesn't reach the same emotional impact. The money is on screen though
Replying to @dosnostalgic
It does look like it was an absolute bitch to shoot. Props to every department involved, and the poor actors.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Well, that was William Friedkin's Sorcerer. It's not a bad movie. Worth watching for its visuals alone. But in the end, just like the case with 95% of Hollywood remakes of French films, it's a lesser copy of the original.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Still stand by my list of Hollywood remakes that are not actually bad:
True Lies - honestly it's better than the original
The Birdcage - just as good. A great cast.
Some Like It Hot - it's a remake of a German movie, but that in itself was a remake of French movie, so it counts.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
12 Monkeys is more inspired by than a straight remake, and it's good, so there's that.

https://youtu.be/N8He8hc2vRE
Replying to @MalcolmRobins20
That is true, but honestly very few remakes are of the quality of The Thing, or The Fly. In fact, those two ALWAYS come up when discussing remakes, but very few others do. And it's been 30+ years.
Replying to @MalcolmRobins20
Also take a note that I just watched a remake of a film that I watched last night for the first time. So I had absolutely no nostalgic feelings for Wages of Fear. It is just a better film, despite being made nearly 70 years ago
Replying to @washoutstopgap
The visuals are SO FUCKING GOOD. It was hard to look away. But Wages of Fear felt like someone was kicking me in the fact for two and a half hours, while this most certainly didn't.
Replying to @calil_bfr
La Totale! isn't a great movie particularly. Which is why I think True Lies is a good remake. Being bigger and more polished and even more over the top works really well for it. It's not a remake of any sorts of a classic.
Replying to @washoutstopgap
in the face*
Replying to @MalcolmRobins20
The Evil Dead is an okay movie, but nowhere near as impactful as the original. SWD is a remake of A Fistful of Dollars only in the same sense as Star Wars is a remake of The Hidden Fortress, so 🤷♂️, Night of the Living Dead 90 is considered by many to be one of the better remakes
Replying to @MalcolmRobins20
I think the case with The Fly or The Thing is specifically is that they don't feel redundant, and have little to do with the originals. Scarface is another example of that in the non-horror genre. By now nobody even remembers the original.
Replying to @MalcolmRobins20
Honestly speaking Scarface is probably THE best example. Because its recognition eclipsed the original so much, the original might not even exist.

Watched an 80s horror film documentary "In Search of Darkness". It was mostly fun. I did fall asleep in the middle of it. Not sure who it is for tbh. It's 4 hours of discussing a handful of movies from each year 80-81 with random 80s horror related topics in-between years.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
So half of the documentary is essentially just a list of 80s horror flicks, and not a particularly interesting one. Like EVERY 80s Friday the 13th is on there, for example. I've seen every movie on that list, and own all the ones that are worth owning.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
So who is the audience for it? Who is this format targets? I'm guessing:
- People who have watched horror movies in the 80s, but then grew out of it. Lots of reminiscing and familiar faces is sure to summon lots of nostalgia.
- People who haven't seen much 80s horror 🤷♂️
Replying to @dosnostalgic
In the end it just doesn't feel like it was a documentary for me, a pretty hardcore 80s horror fan. But it was well put together, and I kept watching despite all of this. So maybe it is something you can show to your kids when they get to horror appropriate age, or smth like that

Watching some old video footage from my Russian hometown, and oh my god, even in the year 1995 we still didn't have a single McDonald's! 😄 The first one would open on this very spot in 1997.

Soviet interactive educational program "Гроза" [Storm] (DOS, 1991) made using Sierra On-Line's AGI engine!
Replying to @dosnostalgic
It appears its intended use was a demo of the "AGDS" package, which I assume was a Russian developed set of tools for making your own projects using AGI. All rights reserved indeed. 😄 Surprisingly, all the music from Sierra games that appears in "Storm" is also credited!

I'm surprised I've never heard of it. Or maybe I've just forgotten. By the time I discovered the AGI scene AGI Studio was already a thing.

Yeah, technically it's very impressive. Especially knowing that Aliens was shot on notoriously crappy film stock. A few years ago I read how much the restoration cost, and I can't recall the number right now, but it felt astronomical.

Nascar Racing predates Screamer by a year, and they are also quite different games technically. It wouldn't be fair to compare the two. There's quite a lot of simulation going on under Nascar's hood, while Screamer goes all in on graphics.
