It's Friday night during a quarantine! Who's ready to join me on a journey through Russian pop hits of the 90s? We're going all over the place! It's gonna be terrible, cute, and occasionally great. Let's go, comrades! 🇷🇺 https://x.com/dosnostalgic/status/1247233290312060929
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Preface:
90s Russia was a weird time. Following the disappointing Perestroika, and the subsequent collapse of the USSR, the overall mood wasn't the greatest. With an alleged democracy Russian Federation imported fast food, videogames, foreign tech goodies, drugs, and crime
Replying to @dosnostalgic
But everything felt new. Despite low wages and standards of living every market was full of products and content unseen and unheard until those days. Anyone with a decent amount of money and a few cheap synthesizers started churning out dance songs that were instantly consumed.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Let's begin with no so great. This was a MAJOR hit by Kai Metov called "Position #2". For reasons completely unknown to me he became every housewife's dream. It's objectively terrible, but I absolutely can not hate this *amazing* official music video.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Another hero of the early 90s Bogdan Titomir. Having separated from the successful duo "Car Man" he positioned himself as a "rapper" from the streets with this cheap Marky Mark knockoff video (see bicycle tired on a bike) "Делай Как Я" (Do as I do). It was mega popular.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Titomir notoriously once answered an interview question "Why are you singing this kind of garbage?" with "People eat it up." thus giving quite a slogan for all modern Russian show business.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Clones? We got em! It was the 90s, and what was popular? That's right, Ace of Base! Well, meet Vostok with their only hit "Миражи" (Mirages) from 1996. Pupper alert!
Replying to @dosnostalgic
And now a legend! DJ band Ruki Vverh (Hands Up) with their super hit "Крошка Моя" (My Baby). They were extremely cheese and super prolific and became hated by just about everyone. The style was instantly recognizable. But cheesy didn't mean you couldn't dance to it!
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Ruki Vverh's input in music outside of Russia was selling their song "Песенка" (Little Song) to a German eurodance band ATC who covered it as "Around the World (La La La La La)" in 1999, and became an international success
Replying to @dosnostalgic
And now the good stuff. Чугунный Скороход (Cast Iron Speed Walker?) with their hit "Милиция" and a music video shot in a local high school. Having children dance with lyrics like "Hide the drugs, it's the cops!" was sure something. It was a different time.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Here's Diskoteka Avariya with their hit "Давай Авария!". Always liked them. These guys from a rural town had lots of talent & energy. They sampled & were influenced by every popular piece of dance music. They mostly played 2 their local audiences until discovered in the late 90s
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Something a bit more somber. Russky Razmer and their minor hit "Вот Так". This is it. A great tune.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Here's the band "Hi-Fi" and their hit "Не Дано". At the time I used to despise just about everything this band's producer was involved in (and it was a lot), but today I really enjoy this particular tune. There's something delightfully simple about it.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
In my opinion the pinnacle of generic Russian pop that is meant to appeal to multiple generations, but still has a beat. Alyona Apina and her mega hit "Электричка" (Train).
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Ivan Kupala eventually became known as a band, but it was just a lone DJ who worked with USSR-era recordings of Russian folk songs. The mix of competent music and rural village singers worked incredibly well. This was the breakout hit "Kostroma":
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Tatyana Bulanova was a folksy singer who scored a danceable hit with "Ясный Мой Свет" (My Bright Light) and then spent the rest of her career chasing that same high with little success.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Let's get back to crap for a second. Here's Irina Saltykova with her non-hit "Bye Bye". Irina had a couple of hits early on, but the rest of her output was mediocre at best. She's also known for playing herself as a shallow pop star in the hit film "Brother 2".
Replying to @FPluckn
Ужас какой
Replying to @dosnostalgic
In my opinion one of the best Russian pop hits of the 90s, here's Лицей (Lyceum) with their super hit "Осень" (Autumn). Unlike most things from 1996 this still holds up incredibly well with its folksy vibe, and audible longing. A great track all around.
Replying to @renaudbedard
Replying to @dosnostalgic
One of my favorites Кобинация (Combination) with the song "Бухгалтер" (Accountant) from 1993. A great music video about an accountant who wonders into a cabaret where all wishes are granted, and orders a song about "life, love, and myself". Great use of nonexistent budget.
Replying to @shefys
Да она из каждого утюга тогда звенела. Но всё-равно приятно.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
It's probably late enough to post something really kooky. Here are Дюна (Dune) with their song Октябрятская-Партизанская. Please don't ask me what any of it means. 🤣
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Want something creepy instead? Here's Linda with her 1996 hit "Ворона" (Crow). I remember being incredibly impressed with this music video at the time. Now it feels a bit quaint.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
It doesn't get any more early 90s Russia than Lada Dance and her 1992 hit "Baby Tonight". I freaking adore the goofy choreography.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
It's almost midnight here, so I'm gonna sign off with Alyona Sviridova's 1995 hit "Pink Flamingo".
Replying to @dosnostalgic
I think that was more than enough for tonight. Hopefully you found this thread entertaining. Pray that I don't do one like that for Russian rock of the 90s. Good night. 🥂

Seriously the puzzles are super annoying. At first they are so simple that you to go "oh, that's cute". They take 5 seconds. But halfway through the game they become complex enough to take a minute or so, and you just groan every time you encounter one because the game stops dead
Replying to @dosnostalgic
I'm not crazy about the electrical wiring ones either, but at least they make you move, and one is used brilliantly in the Jeff chapter, so they are by far the least annoying of the bunch.

I wish they'd just finish up & release the Snyder Cut already, just so everyone can shut up. It would be interesting to have another Exorcist 4 situation, where both movies are available, and they are both crap, but each in their own unique way.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Seriously, remember when they made this movie *twice*? Poor Stellan Skarsgard. I hope he got paid a lot.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
This is such an interesting case study. Everything is so obvious. The studio clearly went "oh shit, Schrader's movie is boring. It's just people talking and NOTHING happens! Let's get Renny Harlin to make the same movie again, but with no talking & more EXORCISMS"
Replying to @dosnostalgic
And they got exactly that. One movie that tries to be as smart of an Exorcist prequel as it can, and ends up being boring and unnecessary, and another movie which is all ridiculous action-style scares & minimal plot. Schrader's movie is better, but Harlin's is more fun to watch.
Replying to @MichaelKlamerus
Reshoots always happen. With Exorcist 4 with some minimal changes it's an ENTIRELY new movie. And I love Exorcist 3. There's some merit to some original ideas, I agree, but honestly I think the theatrical cut is a better experience.
Replying to @MichaelKlamerus

Btw, I worked for places where 50% markup was no big deal. Yes, if they paid $3 for something they sold it to you for $6.99. Grocery stores, even small ones, aren't struggling businesses. Profit margins are usually huge.

Replying to @ClassicGamerTWR and @BardsTale
I am against emulating these effects in a way we do today because both modern monitors and print materials lack proper luminescence of CRTs, which is what gives them that specific look. There's no point in "emulating" a crappy part of some tech if you can't get close 2 experience

I had to drive so far to see it in the last indie theater on the island. It wasn't exactly full, I saw some people fall asleep, and a lot were generally confused. Meanwhile I couldn't stop laughing at the story about the goy's teeth. 😂
Replying to @expectproblems
I usually don't enjoy the bleaker of their films, but this one really hit the perfect middle ground for me. And years later my mother watched it, and loved it too, and she doesn't like Coens at all.
Replying to @expectproblems
Yeah, Blood Simple is such an amazingly strong debut. Do you have Criterion Collection distribution over there? Because it has the most amusing visual commentary track by Coens and Sonnenfeld.

Replying to @expectproblems
Well... I just don't know. I'm a bit biased, obviously, I own 11 copies of the third one, but I think that the second one is one of the most creative movies ever.
Replying to @expectproblems
I understand. I grew up in 80s ussr, and saw The Evil Dead when I was like 8, so needless to say my perspective on films and violence was skewed early on. I'm a bit more sensitive to it now, but obviously that's not going to apply to a film I've seen hundreds of times in my life.
Replying to @codykonior
I will gladly accept that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I absolutely love it. It is so bleak, yet so hilarious at times. And the setting is unique.
Replying to @expectproblems
Evil Dead 2 & 3 style violence is essentially cartoon violence to me. Not for a second does any of it affect me. First one is a bit different, just because it's so gross and they play it more seriously, and hold on it for so damn long.
Replying to @expectproblems
Aliens is more emotional, which matters more to me these days. I honestly couldn't tell which one I've seen more times at this point.
