Have you ever played "Jim Power: The Lost Dimension"? It's an obscure French DOS (and SNES) game, and it's currently available on Steam. And it has UNCOMFORTABLE levels of parallax scrolling. Why is that?
Replying to @dosnostalgic
That's because the full title of the game is "Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3D"
Replying to @dosnostalgic
But where is the 3D? Is it in the options? No, it's not. And the game manual states that you can just put on the included glasses at any time and the game will turn 3D!
Replying to @Zeether77
Hey now, I'm working up to that.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
The included glasses are different from your usual anaglyph 3D glasses. The left lens is very dark, and the right is kind of not.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
That's because they use something called Pulfrich effect. It creates an illusion of 3D based on motion and the fact that the eye covered with a darker lens takes longer to process the image. It's quite an interesting solution!
Replying to @dosnostalgic
You don't need special lenses to view the effect at all! Just cover up your left eye with sunglasses or anything else that obscures light, and take a look at the game footage again. 🕶

The Pulfrich effect was used in one more game I know of. Orb 3D on the NES. There are very few moving object in that case, but they create a neat effect of going in front of and behind the playing field. The dark lens should be over the *right* eye
https://youtu.be/9-ADkypJMk4
Replying to @dosnostalgic
The effect was also used in commercials and TV, most notably in episodes of Dr. Who and 3rd Rock From The Sun.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
But the weirdest use of the effect comes from a German show Tutti Frutti, which is that European game show that has ladies stripping topless that some European countries licensed (Colpo Grosso, The Desire Empire, etc.) The effect was used during stripping sequences!
Replying to @HunterZ0 and @plainoldchair
Yes, it doesn't make sense spatially, but then its overpowered by your brain introducing actual *visible* parallax.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
A few episodes of Tutti Frutti are on YouTube, nudity included, but most are in such terrible resolution and so compressed that you can't observe the effect even if you try.
Replying to @HeresJolly
- Make sure the darker lens is over your left eye
- Try a lens of a different color/opacity
- Try some Pulfrich effect videos on YT (lens position might vary)
- You might need your eyes checked.

War Stories: How Myst Almost Couldn't Run on CD-ROM
https://youtu.be/EWX5B6cD4_4
No, Myst was not "ahead of its time". Myst was very much *exactly* at the right time at place. That's why it sold as much as it had. Things that are actually "ahead of their time" don't get recognition until that time arrives, when it's usually too late for that to pay off.

It's been a while since I've revisited the international cut of "Night Watch", and wow, it's worse that I remember it being. It's not a great movie to begin with, but it's pretty creative in how it handles its world building by just showing things, and hoping you get it.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
So what do the filmmakers do to adapt it for international audiences? Cut out 15 min of worldbuilding. Quickly shoot 3 additional scenes of people sitting around, explaining everything, cut them in with atrocious post effects & explaining it by giving the protagonist an ability..

Ice Climber was always one of my favorite early NES games. Playing with a friend could be an infuriating experience, which I relished. In Russia we had the original Famicom version, with seals intact. Of course that wasn't 35 years ago, but in 1993 instead. https://x.com/GameHistoryOrg/status/1223018621120573441

Honestly early multiplayer games where you could intentionally mess with the other player were so much fun. That's what made Capcom's Rescue Rangers great. As opposed to all the games were you unintentionally screw up the other player, like in every single beat em up.

Legendary Entertainment actually has rights for adaptations of Dune in other mediums, since a tv series and game(s) based on it were announced. They should look into re-releasing old Dune games. Cryo's Dune and Frank Herbert's Dune, and Westwood's Dune 2, Dune 2000, & Emperor.

Listen, after Alcon bought everything Blade Runner related, and then re-released Westwood's game, my faith in such things has increased.

Seriously though, remember when Cryo produced a Dune game a decade after their own first game, and they already were in financial peril? And when the game was released Frank Herbert's name was misspelled right on the title screen?

I still have plenty of Russian dumplings, and multiple cans of sprats. If I wanted to make things any more Russian, I'd buy a bottle of vodka. Why don't I drink anymore, again? 🤔
