They are both pretty interesting as both try some new things. First game has interesting mechanics that are pretty different from other Sierra games of the time, and the second one really leans into the detective novel style.

It's intentional. You can dead end yourself fairly easily, as you're allowed to drop items at will and such. But the game does mess with you constantly always keeping you on edge. Reading a book can kill you. Or when it randomly plays the enemy attack music 4 no reason.
