It's intentional. You can dead end yourself fairly easily, as you're allowed to drop items at will and such. But the game does mess with you constantly always keeping you on edge. Reading a book can kill you. Or when it randomly plays the enemy attack music 4 no reason.

A voxel head was originally planned, but Frederick never got around to it. Polygonal head was made instead right before going to master. The screenshots are from April of 92 and the artists just painted over still shots in Deluxe Paint. The actual head was just a yellow sphere.

None of the original DOS Alone in the Dark games have textures. The closest the first game got was fuzzy materials of sorts that are used almost everywhere.
I always wanted to try out a CyberMaxx, but after hearing the story of System Shock dev team having to pull one off a tester's head because it overheated and caught on fire, I don't think I'd be as enthusiastic about it anymore.

What's "faithful to the look of the original"? These are just flat images, and they are both equally as faithful. Both have scaling options that alter the image in some way, but nobody's forced to use them.

Yes, they both can do that. Aspect ration correction isn't that difficult. Except now ScummVM offers a pixel perfect option via window boxing and scaling to the nearest integer, and DosBox doesn't.
