People keep bringing up the tech aspects of Duke 3D in 1996, and I just want to point out that Duke Nukem 3D was still pretty advanced. Yeah, it wasn't Quake, but what was? That's like saying Bioshock wasn't as advanced as Crysis. https://x.com/tametick/status/1156935505231192065

Replying to @1985R and @GraczykMatt
Running a Google-size server farm, and a bunch of isps is more efficient than running a game locally? If that doesn't sound bad to you, then it's all good. It doesn't offend me.
Replying to @1985R and @GraczykMatt
No, it doesn't. But you know what does? The ability to download the *entire* game, instead of wasting enormous amount of resources by having an equivalent of HD video of that game streamed to you.

That was my original point indeed. Unlikely? Possibly, but it seems very likely to me. Let's wait and see.
Replying to @1985R and @GraczykMatt
On paper, maybe. I'd like to see what quality of game streaming would actually work with mostly terrible and costly internet connections around the US.
Replying to @1985R and @GraczykMatt
As far as being poor and all, I grew up in Russia during the time average monthly salary varied between $20 and $50 US dollars for like a decade. I had a ZX Spectrum in the 90s. I had a Pentium 75 into the year 2002. That's partially why I do what I do.
Replying to @1985R and @GraczykMatt
Also, if the next PlayStation is really $900 (I'm having a hard time actually picturing Sony shooting themselves in the foot *that* badly) then I hope it'll make PC gaming more popular. You can get a decent machine for like half that price.

In retrospect Duke Nukem 3D is not particularly funny, but also not offensive. I don't think it's a hot take of any kind.
Replying to @NoxicoDev
I honestly find that difficult to believe. *However*, potential offending elements would be softened if they were presented as actual comedy/parody, and the game really struggles in that aspect.
Replying to @DonjonRelic
It's really just bare minimum. Over the top hero? He's not much more over the top than a protagonist of an 80s action flick, and those things were sincere 90% of the time. Quotes are just quotes. They aren't references, and there were only a handful of them.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Now BLOOD is a totally different deal. 😉
Replying to @pube_squad
Wasn't that the plot of the rejected DNF proposal by Yahtzee?
I think a lot of it also had to do with quantity. Like Duke *barely* says anything. It's like 5 direct quotes from movies and 5 "humorous" lines like "holy shit". Caleb talks nonstop. And yes, a chunk of it is quotes, but I love his singing, especially when he forgets the lyrics. https://x.com/DominicTarason/status/1165362226229841920

And in turn that makes him more fleshed out as a character. And that made that game age so much better (not talking about gameplay here), because there was actually a little bit of substance there. Compare it with giant yikes from the same year that was Shadow Warrior.
