There were plenty of games broken on day 1 around that time. Sometimes you would discover this by reading the included file (after installing) that mentioned your video card as being incompatible. Oops.
Replying to @happy_emi
In fact games from that specific period are notoriously hard to run in general, and are littered with bugs. I keep several Win98 era machines around, not to mention several different VMs just so I can maybe run some stuff, and I don't always succeed.

I wasn't referring to running these games on modern machines. They were hard to run then too. That's why I have to have several actual machines, and several VMs. Sometimes a game will run correctly on just one of those configfileurations.
Replying to @happy_emi
If the game doesn't run on majority of the machines, or is unfinishable on release day without a patch, that is unquestionably bad. Otherwise I don't really mind patches. I bet a lot of devs from back in the day wouldn't mind day one patches, if they were available.

You initiate on the server, connect null modem games, it tells you to run a MODE and CTTY commands on the client, the client receives just the Laplink exe and a config, and executes it. Done.

For people asking how the remote install worked: it asked you to initiate a COM port for data transfer, and then change terminal to that port using DOS commands on the client. Microsoft's LapLink knockoff Interlink also had that feature, and here's a shot of that:
