Once Win32 would finish loading, there was almost no trace of actual DOS left running in it, except for the bit that would intercept drivers and stuff. DOS was used almost exclusively as a boot loader in those days.

Being familiar with Lynch's work I expected something like this, BUT the series actually was leading to a closure, and my interpretation of the ending was incredibly upsetting to me. Cooper didn't deserve any of this.

I don't subscribe to the abuse theme as a thing. For many reasons. But most importantly "is this a story of a little girl who lived down the lane?" And the answer is no. Things that are happening between worlds are bigger than Twin Peaks. Cooper was just a tiny spec caught in it

To me that's what the ending is about. Throughout the entire series we're led to hold Coop as a true ideal of everything pure. There's nothing he can't handle. And then in the end we find him in a world he doesn't belong, completely helpless. It's devastating.

Coop didn't prevent her murder in the end. In the Final Dossier it's revealed that Laura Palmer just ceased to exist. She was never born. The Evil inside both Sara (she was the bug girl) and Lealand therefore had no target. Sarah became an alcoholic, Lealand killed himself.

"Lynch vision" or not, I kind of find it a little reductive when some suggest that Frost's writing is merely a canvas on which Lynch paints. Clearly a lot of the actual world development belongs 2 him, and Lynch said both back in the day & now that Frost was doing most of writing

I have to revisit Desqview, because I have never seriously used it, but in my memory it's pretty basic. In Win3.1+ you can, for example, put a high res EGA mode game in a Window (with Win itself running in VGA or SVGA mode), and move that window around.

It does freeze the apps, but it most certainly allows them to co-exist concurrently without crashing. Win95 unloads DOS at bootup, and replaces it with its own VM that's designed to capture direct DOS calls and route them to the kernel.

I myself have NEVER upgraded anything for a game. When I was a kid in Russia, any kind of upgrade was out of question. I just stuck with what would run. Then eventually I got a Pentium 75 that served me well and ran just about everything I wanted for a long time.

Let's face it, Tex Murphy games were never that great, so Tesla Effect can be enjoyed in a very similar way for about 4-5 hours. And then all the gameplay past that mid point is absolutely dreadful.

Also I'll say that the game plays somewhat slower in DosBox than on an actual machine, and therefore the controls feel more sluggish than they actually are. Playing it on real hardware is also more challenging, as enemies are also faster.

In MadSpace the video setup is in the config program. You can also calibrate voice commands in there if you have a Sound Blaster 16 or another late SB card that allows sound input in DOS.

Flashback on DOS has extra content that was cut out of the versions for machines with less resources (game was primarily developed for the Genesis.) Another World for DOS has a full entire level added & has difficulty tweaked, changes that stuck around for all subsequent versions

Max Payne 2 dramatically changed the shooting mechanics of the first game, but then it doubled down on the atmosphere and writing, and in the end, I feel, is a stronger game out of the two, despite being *much* easier and also about half the length of the original.
