Replying to @kreeskrull
Mine too. So now I'm spending some time listening to the versions I'm not as familiar with. Considering making a video.
Sega CD version of Dune's soundtrack isn't bad. But very Genesis at the same time. Picq once again reworked it for the YM2612.
Replying to @kreeskrull
Be sure to check out all six versions! ;)
So far my order of preference of versions of Dune's music:
1. AdLib Gold
2. AdLib
3. Sega CD
4. Spice Opera
5. MT-32
6. Amiga
Replying to @dosnostalgic
MT-32 version is the worst by *far*, but Amiga loses points for only having 3 tracks. I mean, come on, 3 music tracks for the entire game?!?
Replying to @kreeskrull
AdLib Gold is how it was MEANT to be heard.
Replying to @kreeskrull
AdLib and Sound Blaster both have an OPL2 chip, while SB16 and later have OPL3 or clones. So yeah.
Replying to @z1lt0id
The arrangements often just don't work. All of the effects possible with synthesis are lost by having to stick to MIDI.
Replying to @z1lt0id
Most songs lack any sort of depth, and while some are kind of okay, some (Chani's Eyes, for example) are totally *ruined*.
Replying to @arcturusdeluxe
Really? Oh no. Klepacki's Dune 2 DOS soundtrack was so good.
Wow. I just learned that Dune 2's soundtrack on Amiga consists of pretty much just this: https://youtu.be/XoNPy5ttpd4 Are you fucking kidding me?
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Wow. And these are the comments. Holy shit.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Yes, 2 minutes of a single sample variations is surely better than nearly an hour of actual music. Jesus.
Replying to @TrollDecker
I'm just in shock now. This is terrible. But now I have another "weapon" against "it was better on Amiga" people ;)
Maybe I should make a two part video?
Part 1: It was better on the Amiga
Part 2: It was NOT better on the Amiga
Another game that I now see is pretty weak on Amiga vs the PC version - Ween: The Prophecy. Ouch. https://youtu.be/8r0H9S3q3Ms
Ok, I'll stop with the Amiga bashing. I'm just really disappointed by its Dune 2 version.
Replying to @PixelMetal
Maybe, but damn, the whole game has like 6 minutes of this "music" total. It's terrible.
Replying to @z1lt0id
It wasn't done lazily. Picq recomposed for each of the devices. Just that much you can do with that sort of music.
Replying to @z1lt0id
Like, can you imagine a MIDI version of Jesper Kyd's Batman & Robin soundtrack? I sure can't. It's not meant to be played with >>
Replying to @z1lt0id
>> realistic instruments. Not to mention again, not all of those things can be described in notes. You need a synthesizer.
Replying to @PixelMetal
Dude, it's 6 minutes of ONE sample pitching up and down. What quality?
Replying to @z1lt0id
Mods and limited space. Games had to work off the disks directly, etc. Samples are great, but only 4 channels, etc. It adds up.
Replying to @PixelMetal
Really? How is it better quality technically? Because I can actually open up one of these mods & tell you the quality of the >>
Replying to @PixelMetal
samples inside of it, but I can't tell you it's not gonna be a the 49,716 rate, which is what OPL chip outputs
Replying to @z1lt0id
CD-Rom version is the same as the floppy. You need the Spice Opera album.
Replying to @PixelMetal
Just to your ear. The samples in Amiga mods are mostly very low quality. The tech is impressive, no doubt, esp. for 1985.
Replying to @PixelMetal
But as far as actual rates go, yeah, no.

Replying to @z1lt0id
Yes, DOS CD-ROM is the definitive one. Although I personally prefer the original floppy one. Don't need pre-rendered videos & fmv.
Replying to @PixelMetal and @hkeycurrentuser
First, MT-32 was a professional piece of sound hardware, not for games. If you're talking AdLib, that's FM...
Replying to @PixelMetal and @hkeycurrentuser
... synthesis, and has nothing to do with midi. Also, it's apples and oranges. Very different systems.
Replying to @z1lt0id
There has been some movement recently. One of the DosBox branches implemented it and, and PCem team is also working on it.
Replying to @z1lt0id
DosBox version lacks the surround module support, I think. Not sure what's the story with the PCem one.
Replying to @PixelMetal and @hkeycurrentuser
AdLib didn't feature any midi whatsoever. It was your software that played midi using it.
Replying to @z1lt0id
I've seen this... well, 4 year ago. Haven't tried it. Someone already had put out their recordings of Gold soundtrack recorded..

Replying to @krysti_nf
Yeah, well... So Nintendo had their "fan" aka customer covered. That's the only "fan" they'll ever care about.
Replying to @krysti_nf
Same as Blizzard shutting down a fan legacy server, etc. They don't need to look cool. People will still pay for Mario/Link.
Replying to @krysti_nf
Yes, the answer is yes. So far we have no evidence to the contrary.
Replying to @krysti_nf
The market size of those two things wasn't even remotely comparable
Replying to @krysti_nf
People have the power to change culture. It's they who need to act, not corporations. Companies will only serve the interest.

But people are too busy about dreaming about a new Zelda on the NX, or whatever it's called. So it's not gonna change.

Fan interest brings business. Companies are coming around. Because of internet videos Bubsy and Super Noah's Ark 3D are back.
Replying to @krysti_nf
We need to show that there's a possibility of a market is there. Nintendo's stance on fan implementation been the same for 20 yrs

They tried. A lot of those are also beyond their legal reach. And by now there are too many. Not to mention that's where they >>

And, of course, secondly is that it's... well, it's a poorly designed game.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses
LSL is rough for the MOST of the series tbh. Like, really. Most of them aren't good games. At all.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses
LSL 7 is one of the BEST designed Sierra games that isn't a Quest for Glory, and I stand by that.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses
LSL 6 is well designed as a game, but as far a humor goes and everything. It's really.... idk, hurtful? It treas Larry bad.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses
And LSL 6 treas everyone else badly as well. The women too. The trans "twist" just... yuck. And the liposuction? D:
Replying to @PushinUpRoses
Yeah, that was really bad. I remember feeling really awkward about it when I 1st played it, which was in the late 90s.
Replying to @richardcobbett and @PushinUpRoses
Yeah. I actually recorded a podcast about LSL series a few days ago, and I mentioned all of these points.
Replying to @richardcobbett and @PushinUpRoses
LSL 6 is really gross as far as the humor goes. But the adventure design is very solid. Weird.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses and @richardcobbett
He was stereotypical and offensive, but the positive stuff in LSL7 overpowers all of its shortcomings.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses and @richardcobbett
In LSL6 you flat out can die if you accept Gary's "invitation" :/
Replying to @richardcobbett and @PushinUpRoses
I do too, but again, I played it when it was contemporary, and I was a teen, and it was still :/
Replying to @richardcobbett and @PushinUpRoses
I recently revisited 5 and... well... that was... a lot of nothing.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses and @richardcobbett
I think that's where 7 clearly wins. It's not really mean in any way. And the puzzle design is lots of fun.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses and @richardcobbett
So the growth is very much evident. The progression is clearly visible throughout the series.
Replying to @PushinUpRoses and @richardcobbett
In fact LSL7 is such a major step forward in so many areas, it's almost shocking to retroactively play it now
Replying to @richardcobbett and @PushinUpRoses
Yeah, it's really a giant step. Reading the design doc is weird because it's really all there.
Replying to @richardcobbett and @PushinUpRoses
I just maintain that 3 is a bad game, despite being one of the fan favorites.
Replying to @richardcobbett and @PushinUpRoses
5 is a really weird game. It's not hurtful exactly, but it's... just... yuck.... at times.

??? Surely almost all NES franchises predate PoP.
Replying to @Moodsteer and @DavidXNewton
Of course because the original was a huge hit. But let's say something like Elite had more ports.
Replying to @Moodsteer and @DavidXNewton
PoP was definitely a massive success, but it wasn't really a franchise until Ubi took it over. >>
Replying to @Moodsteer and @DavidXNewton
There's a FIVE year gap between games in the 90s, which was almost unforgivable, & even then PoP3D failed miserably
Replying to @Moodsteer and @DavidXNewton
From there we have another FIVE years until the next game and that's when its successfully rebooted.
