I'd say that in the last 10 years I've seen a steady increase in the amount of DOS coverage as per retro gaming scene. It's great.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Most of it seems to come from people who experienced it as 90s kids. As in most stuff that people are nostalgic about is from the 90s.

80s IBM PC gaming (DOS or not quite DOS) is still rather unrepresented. Only the GIANTS like Sierra seem to be getting some light on them.

Replying to @dosnostalgic
Version 0.3 from 02/28/93. 4 weapons, automap, beginnings of proper levels, clear space base look
Replying to @dosnostalgic
The maps seen in this version ended up in the final game. Map 8 is clearly the beginnings of E1M2, for example
Replying to @dosnostalgic
0.3 wasn't actually discovered until last year. Tom Hall is still credited. Also I'm "quite a bad person" apparently
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Version 04. 04/02/93. New hud, more textures (animated ones as well), maps closer to final. Remnants of space base
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Version 0.5. 05/22/93. Collisions, doors, 35 fps frame rate, pickups, sector effects
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Most things seem to function well in 0.5. Still missing the enemy ai though.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
These are found in the resources of 0.5: an intermission screen, and some kind of a weapon that didn't make it
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Press beta 10/04/93. Almost the final game, but differences all over the place. Life counter, status bar, items, etc
Replying to @dosnostalgic
You can see a lot of the differences in this clip. And yes, the game is still silent
Replying to @dosnostalgic
The BFG works in a totally different way
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Lost Souls. Different art, different ai, ranged attack
Replying to @dosnostalgic
And that is it for WIP DOOM. Yes, it would be cool to see some progress between 0.5 and the press beta, but that is all that's out there.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
As far as video game history goes, DOOM's history is incredibly well documented. We're really lucky that way.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Even the fan created stuff is well documented AND available, along with all the official DOOM stuff. A real rarity.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
All this stuff is valuable history. Unfortunately stories like "it just all went into garbage" are a lot more common
Replying to @dosnostalgic
Stuff like sketches, design docs, notes, and other physical stuff belongs in museums and archives. Not basements/garages that get flooded.
Replying to @dosnostalgic
And alpha-beta stuff, work in progress data belongs online, so 40 years from now people can look at all of it, and trace the journey >>

Then you run "descumm -[scumm version] [script file name] > [text file name]" to dump the result in a text file
