You know, I always liked Quake, BUT at the time I'd rather play Duke Nukem 3D. Or any other Build game, really.
It took me years to realize how beautifully designed some of Quake's levels were. Especially because time passed, but there was no other
game like it out there. Abstract design in full 3D never took off, and Quake remained the highest reached point of that.
Today I play Quake and marvel at it. I also remember calling it "ugly" and some other shit that I'd never call it today. Fantastic game.
At the time I was fooled by the colorful graphics of Build games, "realistic" environments, and maybe a bit let down that Quake didn't live
up to id's promises and hype. I was wrong. And I could only see it years later. I still love Duke 3D, don't get me wrong, but I adore Quake
for being a completely unique experience.

Don't know how I feel about videos this long, but hey, here's a very well produced 50 min video on DOOM: https://youtu.be/6A4-SVUHQYI
Honestly I only had one tiiiiny issue with it (& many other things about Doom I've been watching & reading lately):
DOOM's modability. While, yes, it was a very cool move to allow players to run the game with custom data banks, there were NO tools or
instructions provided of any sort. First user mad was made in a HEX editor and all fire formats had to be figured out by the fans first
before ANY kind of tools appeared. Also nobody seems to mention that DOOM map editors were obtuse as fuck for a loooong time.
DOOM's support for user created content was great, but it didn't do shit for you in 1993.
This isn't a rant against DOOM. Such a thing wasn't seen much in games back in those days, but I feel that it's important to mention to
how many hoops one had to jump through to actually mod anything in DOOM originally. Our understanding of "modding" today is very different.
As much as I don't want to go dig out my car, it has to be done.

Yes, I largely agree. But at the same time there was a lot of established convention breaking back then too. Just look at Monkey Island.
The variety of computer games vs. console games is easily explained:
Two people in a basement couldn't make a SNES game
Hell, take a game I don't even like - Myst. There's a spirit of experimentation all over the thing. Nobody cared if it was a "game".
Devs saw Macs, 3D rendering packages, and Hypercard and that's all they needed. And they started as a bunch of people in a garage.
Replying to @mcclure111
Yes. Both.
People are tweeting me about Cyan's pre-Myst games. Yes, I've seen them. My point was about not adhering to anything. They didn't play games
Replying to @dosnostalgic
They didn't care for format. They just made what they wanted. They saw the platform as a medium.
Now, I'm not knocking modern gaming. The situation is drastically different today.
For example, two people in a basement theoretically could make a game for a console. Or for a phone which just about anyone has.
Tools are much more accessible. Now a 10 year old can make a full 3D game in Unity for free. That's just incredible.
Replying to @strangeqargo
Not really. Why would it be?
At the same time platforms are many, the field it's super competitive, and everyone needs to eat. Things are just very different.
Maybe it's because we have more gaming history behind us that it's harder to experiment? I don't know.
I've heard games today described as "it's like [game name] meets [game name]". Very Hollywood. That's kind of shitty.

I do both. My DosBox config autoexec loads everything that pertains to dosbox, like mounting drives and such, and

then it loads autoexec.bat that has all my variables set and such.

The game doesn't allow turning while strafing, as far as I can tell. No matter what you do with controls. It annoys me to no end.
That is indeed funny. Although not exactly a change, since Lobotomy is an American company. https://x.com/RattyPumpkin/status/693927966724743168
Working title for Powerslave was "Ruins: Return of the Gods"

Can I trademark nostalgia? Don't be alarmed, not all nostalgia. Just of the MS-DOS gaming variety.
