Good morning! Here's a bunch of DOS games:
Anyone who thinks that video games were always based largely around violence isn't familiar with computer gaming
Replying to @expectproblems
Yep
Video game history is bigger than consoles. Not everyone has grown up with Mario. Some grew up with Monty Mole. Some with Commander Keen.
Replying to @expectproblems
It's essentially what it is. It addressed none of the issues & looked antiquated in 96
Replying to @expectproblems and @thedippaeffect
It controls just as awfully, it has levels instead of an open world. And it's fucking hard. Bad art.
Replying to @thedippaeffect and @expectproblems
Let's not forget that it was 96, and games with great controls were around. Carmageddon was around the cover
Replying to @thedippaeffect and @expectproblems
They don't fit with the rest of the game stylistically and look awfully cheap
Replying to @thedippaeffect and @expectproblems
Huh? It's called "Quarantine 2: Road Warrior", the same as the Mad Max film that predates it by 15 years.
Just got the news that one of my friends passed away. Shit. He was a good guy. Only 57.

And yes, I think Tim Burton's film, despite its shortcomings, is a much more faithful adaptation of the book and therefore a little better.

It's #NotDOS, but I just had to share this amazing Iron Helix (1993) installation program: https://youtu.be/znvfCn3s4nY
And I also have to say that despite being a very early CD-ROM FMV game (and also being available on Sega CD) Iron Helix is a decent game.

How about games that are picky about your extended memory? "Press disable your memory manager." BULLSHIT!
How about CD installers that test your system specs & then refuse to install because they can't recognize that your pc is beyond a 486?
Games that auto detect your sound hardware, but the detection is broken, so it only works on a 286. Bullshit!
Games that have to be run with a parameter to configure the settings. Just make a separate setup program, so I don't have to read the manual
Games that allow you to remap the keys, but refuse to put in keys that already in use, but the 2nd player config is on a different screen!
Wtf, Twitter? This isn't helping! https://x.com/CuteDose/status/623339016243429376

For the record: Fascination is a great example of how NOT to design an adventure game.
I know people shit on Urban Runner a lot, but at least it's rather possible to actually progress through it for a while.
Fascination can only be played with a walkthrough. No amount of cartoon tits can distract from its insane puzzle design.
Only Muriel Tramis managed to design children's games with one hand & porny adventures with another.
French developers are weird. I'm not particularly surprised by the fact that porny Coktel games were designed by a woman, BUT...
Tramis and her background make the last chapter of Lost in Time a bit awkward.

Woke up and couldn't go back to sleep last night, so I've decided to properly play some Quake 2 using the new Q2DOS port.
Played about a third of the game and you know what? I'm gonna take back some of the things I said about Quake 2 before
First, I think it's much easier for me to digest Quake 2 in software mode. You know, when it doesn't look like this
I played without music, so that made it a bit easier as well. Overall, it was fun. Maps were well designed & shooting felt great.
But I still don't like its environments, weapons, enemy design, etc. Especially the enemies. Nothing about them I enjoy.
But yeah, maybe I've been too hard on Quake 2 before. It's not awful.
Replying to @strangeqargo
I've played worse shooters. Quake 2's problem is being unimaginative. And enemy design is just bad.

Happy Saturday! Who's awake? Today I'd like to talk about Covox & games that supported it (suggested by @bocha_himself) #MorningDOSTalk
Now, if you're not familiar, Covox Speech Thing was an simple sound device that plugged into your computer's printer port & played sounds
This is what it looked like. You'd plug the output into a device of your choice, like a boombox for example.
Another great thing about it is the fact that it was very primitive & was made out of off the shelf parts, which meant you could make ur own
Here's an old @lazygamereviews episode on it. Check it out https://youtu.be/spOenlrSSOE
Disney at one point released their own version of it with a speaker attached called Disney Sound Source.

Replying to @MurraySwe
Nah
I don't hate the VGA version of Monkey Island. It's the best update of a Lucas game, no doubt partially because Tim Schafer was in charge,..

... So in the end it really just comes down to personal preference.
