In the 90s we had plenty of interactive multimedia products. Nobody cared if they were games or not. What the fuck happened?
Replying to @richardgoodness
I think I sort of understand that, but I also don't get why that's so important to some.
Replying to @limbclock and @richardgoodness
It was always a business. In fact, most of those interactive multimedia things were very high budget.
However, I do remember arguing with people about adventure games a lot. The genre definition. Alone in the Dark, Little Big Adventure &...
... other action oriented games were not adventure games to me. I also argued that it's not the story or inventory that defines the genre...
..., but the presence of puzzles of any sort. I argued that A LOT. And then I grew up and stopped giving a fuck.
Fahrenheit is an adventure game? Of course! Alone in the Dark is an adventure game? Sure!

Here @richardcobbett sums up my feelings on Doom 3: http://www.richardcobbett.com/codex/therichardperspective/second-chance-doom-3/
Essentially they are my feelings on all post-Quake id games. Solid shooty mechanics, but the design is just so bland & ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz.
I'll say that Quake 2 is just as guilty. Same boring & bland shit that gets tiresome after an hour. And the visuals?
Replying to @petergothard
I literally think the compete opposite of that.
Replying to @Corvak
First Quake is amazing. It only gets better with age.
Considering that first Quake was essentially one giant crunch-mode salvage job, one can see that id was once full of people who knew design.
Replying to @JimKWeaver
Yes, that was Grey Matter.
Replying to @petergothard
Well, that's different, of course. I was talking strictly SP.
Replying to @bocha_himself
Same can be said of Doom 3, but it looks like crap today.
Replying to @bocha_himself
Aesthetically I mean.
Replying to @bocha_himself
Technological breakthrough does not equal visual appeal.
Replying to @bocha_himself
It's kind of the same with Quake, really. It's also rather ugly. But at least the design is interesting.
Yesterday I saw a bunch of people use Doom 64 as a prime example of a good DOOM game on a console. Have you actually played Doom 64?
Now, before I get yelled at, yes, mechanically it's the best Doom on a console. A good Doom game it is not though.
Doom 64 made a mistake of trying to improve some aspects of DOOM & just about every "improvement" ended up being a step back for it.
Replying to @ksen_otaku
Plain port would actually have levels that are, you know, good.
Replying to @ksen_otaku
It's an interesting experiment that succeeds where many failed, but it's just not as good, that's all.

Shadows of Cairn adds an open world & stealth elements to the genre. Sounds cool, but the game is really unforgiving. Awful controls too.

Dangerous Dave (John Romero/Softdisk Publishing, 1990) #DOSGameScreenADay
Replying to @ben_304
Haunted Mansion is really well designed until the last couple of levels when you can tell they were just like "fuck it"
Replying to @ben_304
Goez Nutz is actually the last one. And the worst by far.
Replying to @ben_304
I guess they new Gamer's Edge wanted to leave their mark on it. Risky Rescue is okay. It's playable.
Replying to @ben_304
Considering the circumstances under which it was created, I'd say they did very well.
Replying to @ben_304
But it's still challenging and not as annoying as Goez Nutz which is just plain bullshit most of the time.
Replying to @MagicSteve83
Don't think so
Replying to @MagicSteve83
Are you sure you're not confusing it with "Secret Agent"?

Watched Kung Fury last night and didn't like it.
I wasn't crazy about its Kickstarter either, so yeah.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
I think this is largely exaggerated by the Internet which tends to blow up ridiculous stories.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
Not saying it's not baffling and not actually out there, but I think the scope is much smaller than it appears
Replying to @frederik_olsen
No, that's not what I meant. I mean the amount of men bitching is smaller than you think.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
Go to ANY imdb board & you'll see losers shit on EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. Don't go on imdb boards.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
Oh no, you said the word :(
Replying to @frederik_olsen
Stop it! Someone's Google alerts are gonna go crazy!
Replying to @frederik_olsen
I don't know if I need to sequel, to be honest. This is a very fitting end. Much better than Thunderdome.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
Eh. It looks like this was a sequel to Road Warrior and a prequel to Thunderdome.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
In this case it's Africa.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
It's its own film. Visually very modern with its orange sand & teal sky.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
But he still had the Interceptor, like he still had in the second film, but not the third. And you see it get destroyed.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
But he starts off with long hair, like in the third film, indicating that it's Mad Max 2.5. To me.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
Yes, his kid was toddler in the first film. But I think Thunderdome takes place like 12 years after the original film.
Replying to @frederik_olsen
He's also MAD. If the one can accept that the titular character can be played by a different actor, one can accept the kid
Replying to @frederik_olsen
You should watch them. They are fun. Well, except for Thunderdome. But honestly Road Warrior > Fury Road just b.c. no CGI
Replying to @frederik_olsen
Fist one is cool. A cheap indie flick :)

That's the first game. 1988 for Apple II, 1990 for DOS
Replying to @HapaxLegoman
Apple II version is called Dangerous Dave in the Deserted Pirate's Hideout btw
Replying to @HapaxLegoman
I like it, but honestly I grew up with the Spectrum & it had plenty of those kinds of games on it, but...
Replying to @HapaxLegoman
... Haunted Mansion is something very special. I love everything about it. My favorite Dave game.

"Engine" was a loose term back then, but yeah, sort of.

I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to Frederick Raynal's voxel horror 2Dark.
I admire a lot of French developers, but Raynal & Chahi's games had an incredible effect on me. Very inspirational.

Raynal has a bigger track record as a programmer. Popcorn, Alpha Waves, Little Big Adventure.
