#1 method of demanding more or less of something is "voting with your wallet". Prime example:
No amount of winning on social media about existence of two Paul Blart pictures (or something else) is going to erase these films.
If you find Paul Blart appalling, just look at the numbers & see how many people don't, despite the reviews & your bitching.

Why can't someone make a true 90s-style indie first person shooter already is beyond me.
I guess ROTT 2013 got the closest, but it's kind of meh.
I mean, seriously, we're drowning in indie-friendly cross platform 3D engines. Something that wasn't the case before.
I don't need cutscenes, I don't need procedurally generated maps, I don't need weapon restrictions, I don't need Serious Sam-style arenas.
All I need is balanced enemies & weapons and a bunch of maps that conform to 90s abstract level design standards.

I wish there was more photos of me playing games. Actually I wish there was more photos of me in general.
All these GTA news bring back my Grand Theft Auto memories:
I wasn't actually aware of the first GTA game till about a year after it was released. I was hanging out at my friend's place & he had it.
Playing it for the first time was pure magic. Even though I've seen open world games before, somehow GTA felt more realized.
It actually felt like a real place, despite looking very simple, even for the time. Certain moments are forever burnt into my memory:
Stealing cars & stringing them together in a chain & then blowing them up to get the most points from a chain bonus.
Police chases with the maximum cop level, trying to break through the road blocks. Giant adrenaline rush.
Realizing you could control a train and then just riding around for 10 minutes. Discovering your first tank & going on a rampage.
Beating the first City. That was tough because YOU COULDN'T FUCKING SAVE.
Replying to @shaneriley
That's GTA 2 #NotDOS
First GOURANGA bonus :)
Accidentally shooting a guy who was your key to the next level. Motherfucker!
And lots and lots more. Generally just fucking around a lot because it was fun, BUT also could earn you valuable points.
Also remember playing GTA: London 1969/1961 & feeling slightly underwhelmed.
It's strange that GTA 2 wasn't well received. I didn't care for it either, but in retrospect it was a big independent over the first game.
I bet most people just didn't care for the weird setting. I think that was my main issue with it.
Just realized that I tweeted "independent" instead of "improvement". :D

Replying to @SeanNOLA
Who admittedly didn't know shit about games when he started.
Regarding that BPD article everyone is RTing: that's just fucking gross.
However, I'd like to think that an average person watching Basic Instinct won't accept it as any realistic depiction of ANYTHING.
(ps. Basic Instinct > Fatal Attraction)
Btw, Roger Ebert had a fondness for nudity in films & also wrote a camp-trash classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. :)
Another reason people would watch At The Movies because it's either you watch two dudes talk about films or you're stuck watching whatever..
... boring bullshit was on the other FIVE or so channels.

I love the indie game scene. There's so much new and interesting stuff being made.
In all honesty its not that different to early computer games in general, so let's not forget that we had a whole bunch of stuff back then 2
"Indie" games is not a recent thing. There was always shareware/freeware before the current indie boom.
And before that, prior to big gaming companies being established, all computer games were bedroom-garage-small team.
There was lots and lots of cool stuff done in the early days of pc gaming. DOS then Windows.
Such a fucking shame that pc gaming struggles to get accepted into "retro gaming" circles.
What that means is that there isn't a whole lot of preservation going on, and countless works are just disappearing.
A company could develop & publish a game with a pitch of "Interactive Poe stories with puppets & William Burroughs."
It's up to YOU too spread the word of #DOSGaming, so maybe one day it'll be also considered cool, just like other retro gaming.
Gaming history IS history. It needs preserving just as much. Especially because the medium is so fleeting & platform-reliant.

Okay, so the last chapter of The Charnel House Trilogy is what really did it for me. Two thumbs up!
The Charnel House Trilogy is kind of like the game-that-takes-place-on-a-train that I was thinking of making, but couldn't come up with...
... any puzzles for. TCGT doesn't really have any "puzzles". I should have fucking thought of that.
Replying to @ashtonraze
My hat's off to you. The Russian furry hat that is.
Somehow I always expect adventure games to have inventory puzzles, but honestly I'm not finding much of that in indie adventures.
I personally play old school adventures for inventory puzzles, something that I feel most people now denounce.
And I really enjoy them too. But at the same time we have things like The Dark Eye, which is puzzle free, minimum interaction linear stories
That's the kind of vibe I've got from TCHT. Didn't expect it, but it was a pleasant surprise.
But more inventory puzzles in adventure games, please. Don't be hatin'.

Now that I had a chance to digest Broken Age a little bit, I'd like to comment on its few missteps.
First, I'd like to point out that while it has a big adventure game no-no - puzzles for characters requiring info only the other character..
... knows, I didn't mind these. Yes, it makes no sense, but I thought that they were somewhat clearly indicated. So I really didn't mind.
The wiring puzzles are crap because the first one forces you to get pen & paper and draw a diagram. After that wiring is just busy work.
The worst by far is knot untying where it's obvious what to do, but you keep fucking up because you're trying to figure out what the...
... tried to depict to just fucking stump you. I must have spent half hour on an otherwise obvious thing! Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.
However the rest is top notch. Lots of very Lucasartsy touches and in general it's very much a Tim Schafer game. I am pleased.

Quake is really great. Makes you miss abstract level design so much.

Listening to @BCT_Podcast. I'm absolutely with @ben_304 on the whole DOOM/Bar analogy.
Another thing that @BCT_Podcast got me thinking about: Just like @GrundislavGames I do a speedrun of Day of the Tentacle every year.
Why is it still fun to play even though I usually don't explore unnecessary conversation branches and other stuff?
I think it's a big element of DOTT and Full Throttle - the feeling of progression. I feel that first Monkey Island has it.
Even though DOTT & Full Throttle are very different in how puzzles are designed, both have this sense of progression throughout.
You feel like you're always moving the story forward. Unlike in, let's say, Broken Age's Cloud Colony where you're just going fetch quests.
Replying to @DevarArcvarron
Yes, it's a big part of it, but as pointed out in the podcast, we usually don't try to search for bonus jokes or anything.
I think Grim Fandango isn't quite the same. Despite having all the charm & humor, it really doesn't quite move so well in its 2nd half.
Same with Monkey Island 2. Of course, that's also partly the fault of some annoyingly bad puzzles in both games.
I'm not smart enough to figure out exactly how these games did it, but that's ok judging by how many other adventures failed to capture that
RT @BCT_Podcast: New episode coming when Internet is good. In the meantime, here is a picture of your favorite Blue Cup Tools. http://t.co/…

All this kind of makes me wish there was an action-less version of Psychonauts. I love the characters & the dialogue so much.
Replying to @kalirion
I like the platforming. It's not bad & it's very varied. But I can't breeze through the game just listen to the dialogue.
Replying to @kalirion
I agree with that. Anachronox is not a very interesting game mechanically.
Replying to @richardgoodness
Hail to the Motherland!
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
I didn't have problems with any of that. I think it's twice for each character & I could tell each time.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Yeah, but there's a difference between a challenging puzzle and a bullshit puzzle. Unfortunately they went for the latter.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Did you do the knots yet?
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
I hated knots because I couldn't identify the first pic on 10 different diagrams.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Lucky. A few people told me they got stuck on that one. I was cursing out loud.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Yeah, but the drawings are too cryptic sometimes.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
It probably happened during testing, but then you can accidentally click out of the conversation and miss the teleport.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Heh. Subtitles actually help when Alex plays the map part. They actually say < HIGH NOTE > and shit like that.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
I think here it's a bit different because here dialog is actually linked with animations.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
All animations were done in Maya & then exported. They are almost literally cartoons. Complete with lip syncing & everything.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
It made sense for such an animation heavy game.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
You forget that this game also runs on a piece of shit phones & such.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Also all of Double Fine animators are 3D animators. They don't have much 2D experience & are used to that pipeline.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Texture sizes are restrictive in this case as well. And you'd still pre-render everything. Not practical in this case.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Broken Age team actually did a very clever thing. The game is very much 3D, it's just you see everything from a flat
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
perspective. Thus they should achieve fluid 2D animation in-engine, which was important for platform compatibility.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
Lots of games put sprites on flat quads. That's nothing new.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
In Broken Age they are not textures on flat quads, they are actual 3D models. Just... flat.
Replying to @GeorgeQGreg
I don't know what you were thinking.
