"Spetters" was another great Paul Verhoeven movie. Now I only got three left. Until "Tricked" comes out at least.
Replying to @AveTory
This one had a full on gay blowjob on camera! All of his films are strong with homosexual subplots.
Replying to @AveTory
That's what it feels like. Porn was very big over there around that time, so mainstream probably felt like pushing the envelope.
Replying to @AveTory
I will say that it's very refreshing to watch a bunch of old non-Hollywood films. The experience is completely different. I love it
Replying to @AveTory
Actually, Verhoeven's 70s films remind me of Balabanov's very often. It's the shock plot twists with characters' human reactions.
Replying to @AveTory
Verhoeven's filming style is very basic. He improved a lot as he moved along, especially in his Hollywood productions.
Replying to @AveTory
Also an interesting thing that he seemed to always work with mostly the same actors and crew on his Dutch films.
Replying to @AveTory
Polanski is great, but his films were always very visual. Just look at Repulsion. I fucking love the look of Rosemary's Baby too.
Replying to @AveTory
Spetters was one, especially. I was thinking of Balabanov half the time. All that was missing is people traveling a lot. :)
Replying to @AveTory
Hauer is absolutely amazing and is in the most of his films. He's a real delight to watch. Hollywood killed him :(
Replying to @AveTory
But what I meat is all of his Dutch films were written by the same person. A lot of them were shot by Jean de Bont and etc.
Replying to @AveTory
Most of my favorite directors do strong visual compositions. Yet I still love people like Balabanov for their character work.
Replying to @AveTory
He WAS amazing in Hobo With A Shotgun. The "bear" sequence almost made me scream "Man, you're ACTING in the wrong movie!!!".

The next person to call Serious Sam (or Painkiller) a throwback to classic shooters (in my presence) gets slapped in the face.

Replying to @richardcobbett

Here's something about Serious Sam: It's fucking booooooooooring!
What makes Serious Sam boring? Fucking EVERYTHING!
Haven't played Painkiller since it came out, but I remember it being fun. Weapons were fun, enemies were fun. That sort of stuff.
Haven't played Painkiller 2 or Serious Sam 3. Nor do I feel the need to. I know how to circlestrafe, thankyouverymuch.
So for my money, Rise of the Triad 2013 is the 1st big real throwback to the classic fps games.
Replying to @richardcobbett
Not when I'm playing them.
Here's one thing about ROTT2013 that I'd like to get out of the way: It's fuck ugly. BUT, let's face it, it's a budget title. So yeah.
And the original game was ugly as well, so it could pass as keeping the aesthetic.

Replying to @AveTory
Brat 2 is full of racism, it's there, but on purpose. To illustrate the ignorance of the characters. The reviewer missed that.
Replying to @AveTory
The characters are most certainly prejudiced. Always have been. - A jew? - No, a German - Good, coz I don't like jews very much.
Replying to @AveTory
That's the beauty of Brother. You get to know what Danila's simple outlook on life is. You get to understand where he's coming from
Replying to @AveTory
"Do we, Russian people, ever trick each other?" I know. I'm just saying it was always there.
Replying to @AveTory
I think Brat would be hard for foreigners to understand. I want to show it to some of my friends, but I have reservations.
Replying to @AveTory
Ignorance. Danila's look on life is very simplistic. He doesn't understand how the word "negro" could be offensive.
Replying to @AveTory
Yes, but then it's given context. Merilyn mentions that he shouldn't say it. That's on purpose for sure.
Replying to @AveTory
Absolutely. But you gotta give it Balabanov - as commercial as Brat 2 is, it's still one of his best films. Somehow.
Replying to @AveTory
First Brat is amazing. I still don't quite understand how a modern Russian movie this good ever got made.
Replying to @AveTory
Will you stop reading reviews written by ignorant people?
Replying to @AveTory
I find the first Brat to be superior. It's full of such amazing things. Brat 2 is very well done, but not as "pure" imo.
Replying to @AveTory
War is fine, but nowhere near as good. Good message and acting though.
Replying to @AveTory
Look at how he introduces Danila's character in the 1st film. You just see him over the hill in the army uniform...
Replying to @AveTory
... He looks around. Walks right in front of the camera. That's it. As a Russian you now know everything about him.
Replying to @AveTory
You get the most of his backstory with no dialogue or any kind of exposition. You just know the type. It's great film making.
Replying to @AveTory
2nd movie doesn't have that. 1st film to me is so much more powerful. And he wasn't afraid to show how things really were either.
Replying to @AveTory
I think many Russian post-Perestroyka films still exaggerated reality in way or another. Balabanov managed to capture reality.
Replying to @AveTory
And fuck you! I'm drunk! It's 1:20 in the morning and I'm already watching the first one. Goddammit!
Replying to @AveTory
Oh dear God, I love the "Yablokitai" album, as awful as it is. It just represents an certain time in my life.
Replying to @AveTory
Yep, the whole thing. It wasn't really Nautilus. Butusov wrote everything, Akvarium actually played the music. Recorded in London.
Replying to @AveTory
Surprisingly, this highly "experimental" album works really well as the soundtrack in Brat. With Balabanov's trademark "traveling".
Replying to @AveTory
And of course it works also as a joke. Because Danila wants to get the album the whole second half of the movie.
@AveTory "You're not a brother to me, you lousy black-ass."
Replying to @AveTory
Showing people traveling on film is not a good thing. Balabanov gets away with that. Although he did abuse it in his last few films

I'm still trying to digest The World's End. While maybe not exactly as funny as Shaun or Fuzz, TWE is also a better film in many ways.

Replying to @AveTory
I rewatched the second one last year (actually I saw all 3 in a row) and really enjoyed it. The final battle is so epic!
Replying to @AveTory
I also like how the 2nd one tries to be its own thing, rather than a Lynch-Cronenberg mashup.
Replying to @AveTory
There's a lot of Eraserhead in it. 2nd onw pushes the body angle more, but adds a bit of cyberpunk & ACTION.
