Who wants to talk about arcade ports? #MorningDOSTalk (suggested by @djbriandamage)
Arcade ports were always popular. Especially on platforms that could never even come close to the cabinet specs. #MorningDOSTalk
Back in the early days it was always impressive when an arcade port was actually fun to play, despite the CGA/EGA graphics & beeper sound

Most puzzles in the Neverhood aren't particularly creative either. The only good thing is that none of them are hard. idk.
Neverhood is style over substance. Yet, the atmosphere it creates is amazing. You just don't want to stop playing.

It's a freezing morning in New York. I'm in a weird mood, so today's #MorningDOSTalk will reflect that. I'd like 2 talk about disappointment
How about disappointing sequels? #MorningDOSTalk
We all remember shareware. Even if we didn't always pay for the full version. But how about shareware that wasn't worth it? #MorningDOSTalk
Honestly, back on the DOS days disappointing sequels rarely happened. But still, there were a few. #MorningDOSTalk
Developed by Legend, rather than Toys For Bob, Star Control 3 was mostly a disappointment for the fans of the series. #MorningDOSTalk

I couldn't get an interesting screenshot of the Face level.
This one is dedicated to @AveTory - not every adventure game lets you play as a flee on a face! #Goblins3 https://x.com/dosnostalgic/status/328520063139319808/photo/1
If you're not familiar with the Goblins series by Coktel Vision, here's my old review of the first game: http://youtu.be/sM6doEurERQ
RT @GrundislavGames: @dosnostalgic A great series, definitely my favorite games by Coktel.
Replying to @JDHJANUS
Because floppy version doesn't have the awful voices & a horrible intro that were tacked on for the CD release. Same with Gob2.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
Russian adventure game 9 Princes In Amber was one of the worst adventure games ever produced.

That's hot.
Today @GGBeyond is bitching a lot about Blood 2: The Chosen. Good, cause the game is pretty shit. http://youtu.be/qFQ8SDTJX7w
Honestly, I would have a whole lot of other things to say about Blood 2. It's one of the bigger disappointments in my gaming life.
However, I feel that the mission pack DID improve the game in a few areas. It just should have been at least 10 times longer.
Also, if you haven't played it - don't bother trying to see for yourself. The game doesn't really work on modern pcs. Not even GOG version.
Replying to @NapnRetrogaming
Comparing to the first one, it wouldn't even be 1% of the amount.

The roots of Wolf 3D are in Gauntlet. Carmack made Catacomb, a Gauntlet clone. Then Catacomb 3D to test his EGA 3D

Trust me, I'm not forgetting. One of my favorite games.
Good morning, Internet people! Who wants to talk about DOS stuff? Well, if you do then suggest a topic for #MorningDOSTalk

Great game, however not by id.

I do that so often, I try to avoid having it as a topic.
.@GGBeyond made a great & very in depth series about id last year. Start watching here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx4Pumqos3s

that shot is from Catacomb trilogy, id had nothing to do with that one
RT @queencuttlefish: @dosnostalgic Commander Keen: Marooned on Mars was my favorite game as a kid. I still have a 3.5" floppy of it around …
Replying to @antonymity
They didn't do that either. It was other Softdisk employees at that point.

id had nothing to do with the last two
Wow. I guess what I learned today is that a lot of people are confused about what games id actually developed. That's a bit surprising.
The history of id is actually very interesting & colorful. You should definitely check out the videos by @GGBeyond: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx4Pumqos3s
And of you're REALLY interested in PC gaming history, Masters of DOOM is an essential book. It's a fascinating look at id from the inside.
My favorite id Software game that was published by Softdisk is Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion. My old review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1fmX4NzTzY
That game had a potential of being great. It shouldn't not have ended up as a budget diskmag release. All it needed was more good levels.
ID Software -> Id Software -> id Software. When's letter S shrinking?
Replying to @PrinceOfBrains
The first one - yes, the second one is available on GOG in a pack.

I think just playing id games played a part in me wanting to make games.

It's the only proper way to do it, really. Tramis was obviously essential to the series.
Wow. Guillermo del Toro is sure spinning a lot of plates!

I'm actually looking forward to that one a little bit. Shane Black seemed like a perfect fit to write & direct it.
Why isn't the Dark Knight Returns soundtrack out yet? C'mon!
Replying to @JonasKyratzes
I guess this movie will kickstart his career as a director. He deserves one. He's been writing long enough.
It's so awesome that wikipedia now has list of samples for some of the electronic songs. Poeple have waaaay too much time on their hands.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a criminally underrated movie. It's always sad when a movie like that is a box office bomb.
I can do it. I WILL make it all the way through Movie 43.Yes. I will be victorious!
Replying to @djbriandamage
I was just looking up a bunch of Scooter songs to see how far they made it in international charts. It was a surprise.
Ok, made it through Movie 43. Ahahahaha. That was pretty awful. Don't really know what else to say.
Just woke up. Partially remembered the dream. It would make a cool game.
The pitch would be weird: It's about a guy who looks like a cat & takes a train that's really a metaphor for his wasted years...
... He lives through different events in his life as he moves through the carts to eventually reconcile with his father who abandoned him.
That WOULD make an interesting game. Since the guy looks like a cat, it's only appropriate to have "9 lives" somewhere in the title.
Please don't listen to anything I say right now. As I have pointed out earlier, I just crawled out of bed.
Replying to @PrinceOfBrains
Exactly! 9 carts for 9 "lives" or wrong choices that he made in the past that brought him to the situation he's in
RT @ID_AA_Carmack: Considering that 8 bit BASICs of the 70s had range checked and garbage collected strings, it is amazing how much damage …
Guten morgen! Are you awake? Then maybe you can join me for some #MorningDOSTalk. How about turn based games? Across all applicable genres.
RT @Resulka: @dosnostalgic Both Dark Sun games were always fun, And the textures for such tiny objects were amazingly detailed!

Dammit. I really want to make that game now. Why can't I ever come up with something I could whip out in a week or so?
I think I also have an idea for a look for the game that I can pull of without begging more talented friends to help me out.
So I have the look, the framing device for the story, the beginning & an end. What I DON'T have is puzzles. That's gonna be tough...
And I'll have to do research on daddy issues. That'll be easy since I know a ton of people with them.

Replying to @PrinceOfBrains
BlitzMax does everything I'd want & is very flexible. But I'm not against using stuff like GameMaker or Multimedia Fusion
Replying to @dramaticchipmnk and @PrinceOfBrains
Agreed. Blitz 3D is awesome for linear programming. Things take shape very quickly. Too bad it's obsolete

Replying to @ShotupSpeako
I usually say that I don't have any tattoos because I have a personality.
The problem with me doing a game about regrets & decisions that led to them is that I don't really have any of those myself.
Not having personal experiences to draw from leaves me with having to ask other people about theirs. I'm not talented enough to make shit up
And that's why I have never fancied myself a writer in any capacity.
