Some games were just too awesome and ahead of times. Remember Airborne Ranger? http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/airborne-ranger #MorningDOSTalk
It was always impressive when games in the 80s managed to push the limited pc technology. MechWarrior was 1 of those: http://www.mobygames.com/game/mechwarrior

One thing that always impressed me:Bethesda's XnGine. Lasted from 95 to 99. They squeezed out a lot out of it. http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/3d-engine-xngine
And even though Future Shock was so buggy it was barely playable, it really showed off the engine. 6DOF with meshes was impressive pre-Quake
My only problem with XnGine is that sprites are rendered as surfaces. Not only it's unusual for the time, it's also annoying in Daggerfall.

Ultima Underworld and System Shock were also 6DOF, right? I can't really remember...
Anyway UU/SS looked 6DOF, but it also looked like the walls were limited to a grid in all directions with a possible 45° angle.

My definition of 6DOF is the engine being able to render surfaces correctly in xyz, not just vertically.
