I'm joking about Minecraft of course. My point being that mainstream gaming situation is very different now.
It's a shame that pc gaming is now mostly associated with horrible drm & inferior console ports.
Back in 92-94 PC games did what consoles only dreamed about. Now that's not the case, but I just don't care about the majority of games now

C'mon! Battleship, Piranha 3DD... It's only the beginning.
Anyone wants to enlighten me about CRPGs? I sometimes feel like I've missed out on a bunch. Only properly played Dungeon Master.
Of course I briefly tried Eye of the Beholder, Might & Magic, Wizardry, various Goldbox games, but I was young in not very interested.
Can I get a few game recommendations or some tactical advice? I feel like I need to play more of these.
I've tried just about all famous ones for dos. I think. Also Lands of Lore, Ishar... There were more, but I can't remember the titles.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
I have. All of these. It's mostly first person real time team based ones that I didn't play much.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
Plus, Fallout and Planescape: Torment came out way later & were easier to play, etc. Planescape is a freaking beautiful game
Replying to @AgustinCordes
Yeah, people were going crazy for stuff like Eye of the Beholder & Wizardry, but I could never get into them.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
Well, there it is. Never heard of it.

Replying to @AveTory
Yes it did, motherfucker. It's not the kind of material he usually picks, but his style is all over it.
@AveTory What confuses me about Burton is the fact he just doesnt have it anymore. Visually yes, but he hasn't made anything good in a while
@AveTory I'm hoping that Frakenweenie will be good, but his last effort as an animation director - Corpse Bride wasn't that great.
Replying to @AveTory
You don't like Beetlejuice? Is that even possible? Good god man.. Ed Wood?

I watch it at least once a year and I fucking love it. :) And so does everyone I know. Thought that it was universally liked by all
Replying to @AveTory

Let's talk about one of the companies that no longer exist. Hmm.. Westwood? You favorite games? Any that you think are underrated/overrated?
Replying to @pecet
I'm in a bad need of a new phone, but with all going on with me at the moment it's not on my priority list.
Replying to @djbriandamage
Just the first one, or the second one too? Hand of Fate is a great adventure game.
Replying to @djbriandamage
Although third one introduced the multiple puzzle solutions & non-linear structure I feel that 3D backgrounds really hurt it
I personally like pretty much all of Westwood's titles. Legend of Kyrandia is awesome, Dune 2 is awesome, Command & Conquer is awesome...
And although I could never get into Lands of Lore (as I confessed yesterday) I'd say the little of it that I played was pretty awesome too.
VGA art & Adlib music in their games were always fantastic. #westwood
And, if you allow me to drift away from dos for a second, FREAKING BLADE RUNNER!!! There's so many awesome things about it!
Blade Runner was one of the best uses of a movie license. The few shortcomings that it had were easily overlooked because of it.
It always surprised me, however, how successful and long running Command & Conquer series was without really evolving.
Speaking of cool RTS games - Z by The Bitmap Brothers is one. Amazing game. Never got the recognition it deserved.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
I don't really like Magic Pockets... But I was really surprised that Z got a sequel. I doubt anyone bought though.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
Sequel. Z: Steel Soldiers in 3d in the early 2000s.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
I didn't play it. But I seem to recall that people who liked the original liked it as well.
Fun fact about me - I love Monopoly! And I although I like different boards, by now I pretty much prefer to play on a computer.
And Westwood developed my favorite version of in 1995. Loved it. #monopoly
Replying to @djbriandamage
Yes! It was awesome. The animations were great. Also internet support in 95. Not that I had internet then #monopoly #westwood
Replying to @AveTory
I think it's assumed that everyone has seen Blade Runner at this point.
The car situation is sorted out. Now I need a new video card. All the DOS Nostalgia videos I have planned are currently on hold.

Replying to @AgustinCordes and @AveTory
I own a solid chunk of his films, even though he's not even in my top 5.
Well. It's finally happening. Nothing like a bit of Paul Verhoeven to cheer me up! #DontJudgeMe https://x.com/dosnostalgic/status/215940027400716289/photo/1
Replying to @AveTory
My top 5 are: Kubrick, Carpenter, Raimi, Carpenter & Darabont. But it would be easier if I made a top 10.
@AveTory Please replace 2nd Carpenter with Cronenberg
Replying to @AgustinCordes
Fuck yes I did.
Replying to @AveTory
Tarantino isn't one of my favorite directors. However, Burton is.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
It's one of a kind, man. I've been laughing for 15 minutes straight. :D
Replying to @AveTory
Whaaat??? Stand the man has been my favorite director for I don't know how long now.
@AveTory The other 5 would be: Jeunet, Burton, Coens, Parker & Besson
@AveTory And it just became obvious to me that I picked directors with a strong visual side. And Darabont just knows how 2 make people act.
@AveTory Getting dangerously close to the list: Scott (Ridley, not Tony) and Aranofsky. Well, I guess Spielberg too, but he doesn't count.
@AveTory Also Verhoeven probably would make it in there, but I'm almost completely unfamiliar with his non-american body of work.
@AveTory I also gotta check out what I missed from Polanski & Bergman. The list might change after that.
Replying to @AveTory
Yeah, Aranofky is edging in on Requiem for a Dream & Black Swan. Both films are flawless in execution.
Replying to @AveTory
I don't give a shit how accurate it is. It's a fucking rollercoaster of a movie. Basically a Cronenberg movie without Cronenberg.
@AveTory Another one who's getting close is Wes Anderson. Just saw his latest movie & gave it a 10/10. You know I don't do that often.
Replying to @AveTory
Scorsese is fucking amazing. I don't know why I didn't include him. A lot of his stuff is very different, maybe that's why.
Replying to @AveTory
And yes, Moonrise Kingdom is a perfect movie. I'm not sure if you'd like it, but it applied perfectly to my sensibilities.
Replying to @AgustinCordes and @AveTory
You've said that before. It doesn't look real to you and whatnot. Idk, I think it's a fantastic film.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
C'mon man. Take away your dislike for the subject for a second. How would you judge the film on the technical side alone.
Replying to @AgustinCordes and @AveTory
Well here we go again. I love it. It's one of my favorite book & I love the film. Got two posters on my wall.
Replying to @AveTory and @AgustinCordes
Well, what the fuck do I know guys, i'm watching Showgirls. ;)
Replying to @AgustinCordes and @AveTory
What I was missing in that picture I took was the bottle of Jager. With that - yes, yes it is.
Replying to @AgustinCordes and @AveTory
It's a one of a kind major hollywood motion picture that takes all the wrong directions it can.
Replying to @AgustinCordes and @AveTory
It's bad, corny, over the top and has Paul Verhoeven written all over it. It's fucking hilarious.
Replying to @AgustinCordes and @AveTory
If you want a truly entertaining bad movie I'd recommend Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" if you haven't seen it already.
Replying to @AveTory and @AgustinCordes
Oh yes. It's celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. :) It's transcends "bad" and is immensely entertaining.
@AveTory @AgustinCordes Oh shit. I totally forgot how Showgirls turns really dark at 1:50 mark. Ugghh. Horrible... :( WTF Paul Verhoeven?
Good morning people. You know what genre I'm not a big fan of? Racing games. I'm just not into cars. Games that involve driving bore me.
I didn't care how impressive Need for Speed looked, I could only play it for 20 minutes before quitting.
However, I always had fun with free roaming games like Test Drive 3 & Vette. Those were fun. Love the music in Lotus: Ultimate Challenge :)
So... People who actually liked driving/racing games back in dos days. Recommendations?
And before anyone says it - yes, Stunts is awesome. I'm aware.
Replying to @AgustinCordes
TD3 would probably make it to my favorites list. I can play it for hours. Horrible controls or not.
Replying to @KrazIIvan
Oh yes, I don't know why I forgot that one.
Replying to @PH7S

In my mind games like Quarantine & Carmageddon are not really about driving. Of course I like them. Especially Carmageddon.
Also Death Track. I'm pretty sure everyone loves Death Track.

I remember playing Lotus: Ultimate Challenge at a friend's house once. No sound card. Music through pc speaker. It was still awesome.
I don't even like the game that much, but I love the music. Too bad I didn't know anybody with an Amiga. MOD audio really did it justice.
Also, only a few years ago I found out that some of my favorite games played even better on the Amiga because of the music.
I fucking love Cannon Fodder, but damn, the adlib score doesn't even compare. Saw videos of Elvira - that music is awesome too.
Replying to @djbriandamage
Yeah, but pc versions of those games usually had adlib music instead. Go figure.
Replying to @djbriandamage
I guess it also had something to do with Amiga's hardware support, while had to do your own MOD player if u program for dos
Replying to @djbriandamage
I'm not sure how Amiga worked, but on pc back in those days you had to handle your own mixing, just piping output 2 a port
Replying to @djbriandamage
I just assume that in a machine with all the same proprietary hardware it would be easier.
Replying to @djbriandamage
I'm aware. Been programming for a while :) Also digging in game resource was my primary hobby when I was young.
Why an outburst of "Really now?!?!" over Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter? I don't understand. Is it because a historical person is involved?
We can accept a giant robot from space that transforms into an expensive car and wields a giant shotgun, but not Abe slashing vamps?

@richardcobbett I think good design is good design, no matter when. Yes, an 80s nes platformer is limited by its time & technology, but...

1 of the best applications of voxels in the 90s was Russian game Vangers - a surreal open world top down racing game. Also a bitch to play.
A mediocre Russian first person shooter Z.A.R (Zone of Artificial Intelligence) had pretty cool destructable voxel landscapes.

Not today.
That is all.

I don't give a shit about concept art. Half-Life is the game I want to play, not look at sketches of.
Good morning everyone! Not sure how often I can participate in a discussion today because my phone dies if I use for more than 30 seconds.
I would like to talk about games that managed quality sound out of pc speaker. There were quite a few.
Playing Another World on a shitty soundcard for example was almost the same as playing it on a machine with a loud pc speaker.
The speech in Beyond Castle Wolfenstein always impressed me. Very clear & understandable. (Unlike the original)
Sound card weren't very common in Russia in the early 90s, so a lot of Russian games made good use of pc speaker. #bornintheussr

lol. Try playing Duke Nukem on those levels with a lot of electric barriers & you'll quickly change your opinion.

That's a yes. Have a few drinks first. It's a riot. :) Are you going to include the original game as well?

It's a good musical & a bad movie. It's enjoyable. As for the game, It never did, but the pc one is basically a remake of it

Who loves Norton Commander as much as I do?
In fact I love Norton Commander so much, I've been using it & its clones all my life. Even now. I barely see my desktop.
The "best" NC clone is probably FAR Manager, but I want my things slightly more graphical, so I've been using Total Commander for years now.
I often wish that my life was constantly accompanied by 80s synthesizer hits.
Like Crockett's Theme every time I take a walk down the street...
Or Moroder's Chase every time I'm driving while being late to something...
Axel F every time I come home from work...
