I think a big part of adventure game nostalgia is the fact that was pretty much the only genre for comedy games. A lot of them were funny.
Now you can have funny games where you blow shit up or race cars, but back in the day if you fired up a game it was serious fucking business
Replying to @IgorHardy
There's that, but I feel that intentionally funny games in other genres didn't come till about mid-90s.
Now that I've seen 2nd ep of the @DoubleFine doc, I've started pondering what it is I actually like about adventure games.
And I'm 1 of those people who defines genres by gameplay, so for me adventure games ARE puzzles & environment interaction.
BUT is it what I really like about them? Even though I think that characters & story are not essential to an adventure game, isn't it...
... what I like about my favorite adventure games? Yes, Monkey Island has clever puzzles, but I keep replaying it for dialogue, not puzzles.
When I was a kid & played a lot of Sierra & Coktel Vision game it was DEFINETELY about puzzles. Loved figuring shit out.
But now I rarely re-install those, but periodically replay LucasArts ones. Hmmm...
